As a former outrigger paddler (now converted to SUP) i was wondering if any guys have edge protectors on your paddles. Outrigger paddle makers use "tuff stuff" around the edge of the blade to protect both paddle and outrigger. My first post, so Hi all.

i got htis stuff from the starboard boys, it's a self adhesive plastic transparent tube, it's really really good, a lot better than lecky tape, but it's rare.

I use 2" black duct tape. It's more stretchy than the grey stuff but not as stretchy as electrician's tape. Electrician's tape works fine.

Tip: If you get a bubble in the tape just prick it with a pin and push the air out.

BTW. I think paddle edge protection is essential. Not to protect your board but to protect your expensive carbon paddle. They're quite fragile and all it takes is contact with the board during a good munching in the surf or a drop onto hard ground and damage is inevitable.

electrical tape is the go , the best brand is nitto you will find it at electrical wholesalers and some hardware stores , the cheap stuff looses it's stick. just use one layer , two layers can make the paddle plonk and try and not stretch it too much when you put it on .make sure when you go around the bottom of the paddle it doesn't kink , just stretch it little on the corners .bring it up on to the shaft and cut it with a knife don't break or stretch it . then put a piece of tape around the shaft to cover the ends , if you stretch the tape too much it will shirk in the sun and loose it's stick.make sure you use nitto brand it's the best electrical tape for this purpose and i also find black is the longest lasting. i have used this on 100's of outrigger paddles with great success.

Not that it helps you in WA, but for the NSW/Manly guys, the surf shop on Old Pittwater Road (not Aloha but the next one on the way to Warringah Mall - Quiksilver?) has a few paddle edge guard packs. They're as you describe W.M. I thought they were made by 3M...

yeah thats the stuff, i think i bought the last piece in W.A. bit pricey at 20$ but very effective,....i can give the side of my delicate JL a firm whack with the edgee of the blade and not have to worry.....

i also got some of that transparent tape , dpwn each rail,,, once again effective but pricey $50....jeez i'm a scrooge.
