It's not about learning to paddle, I'm guessing everyone on here can paddle without hitting the rail. It's more likely when using the paddle during performance surfing. Lumers' old Bonga didn't have any paint left on the rails and this wasn't from hitting the rails while paddling in a straight line (I know, I sold it for him).
We are talking rail protection not performance, the 0.2 of a millimentre that tape provides wouldn't do anything. As I said earlier, multiple layers would have a better effect.
Saying a guard is like training wheels is questionable. If someone wants piece of mind then it's up to them.
wow guys this is becoming almost a ladies meeting forum , genuine question , genuine reply .. the paddle guards are essential in my opinion if you are going to be doing some serious surfing to protect rails & also the deck of your board as pulling in etc it is only a matter of time before your blade slices across your deck. the comment that the guards are training wheels is incorrect as they become much more necessary as your SUP surfing progresses so at the beginning they are a must for rail protection & then as levels are pushed they are still very much needed .. I have been using the SURF Co. product & find they are solid enough to handle daily use & also it is great to be able to lean your paddle against a wall with out the chance of chipping the blade on the road etc.
Ladies & gents keep up the stoke & it would be awesome to see you some time over here in Bali (www.supbali.com) .. cheers SUP PETE
