Sure this has been asked before but are there any good resources out there re paddling technique?

Anything particularly which is relevant to paddling a shorter (sub 9') board would be particularly useful - thanks!!

Google Dave Kalama on youtube.

Do what he says and modify to suit your style of paddling. there are also lots of others there to watch.

Good luck.

My big grizzle is that if I am doing flatwater paddling on a smallish board......I try to do 3 strokes on the right hand side of the board and then 3 strokes on the left.
But can maintain straight course effortlessly while paddling on the right.....but veer quite strongly to right when paddling on left side of board
I find it quite mysterious

Gizzie, take the fin out of the right side fin box. That will get you paddling straight bro!

Try an entry point for the paddle about 35cms away from the board.
While doing the stroke pull the paddle closer as well as pulling it back.

Let me know how that works for you.

Try an entry point for the paddle about 350cms away from the board.

And a 5m long paddle while you are at it

I found these tips from Larry Cain to be the most useful online resource for paddle technique.

N.B this focuses on flat water and most likely change up on the open water

I'm not sure you want to go down the Larry Cain path. Two things for thought:
1) the way he bends from the waist can't be good for your back unless you're built like a brick shothouse like he is. If I paddled like that I'd be on anti inflams for a week. It might be faster but looks terrible for ergonomics.
2) he's got a brace on his left arm suggesting a paddling injury to the elbow or forearm. Perhaps from canoeing. Perhaps preventative. Doesn't inspire confidence though....
