You're right Brooko..It's not that hard at all ! Just stick your blade in and pull water. It's that easy and anyone can do it. That's why SUP is taking off..cause anyone and everyone with no skill can do it. You don't need a lesson at all.

But...it's even easier if you've been paddling for over 20 years with 2 World Titles and numerous other International and National Titles to your name. That's who Woogie is. He's just some guy who finds the paddling side of SUP natural and he has an uncanny talent for spotting technical flaws in others (but only if asked) and he has the ability to help them change their stroke in order to paddle with more ease and efficiency, less injury and more effectiveness. Particularly useful for those wanting to compete in distance/downwind events.

Some people are just new at SUP and have no paddling experience at all. They're windsurfers, kitesurfers, surfers or none of the above. They have expressed interest in learning to paddle correctly and would like to learn from extremely knowledgeable and generous people who offer to share their skills with others.

I talked Woogie into conducting clinics as he has changed and helped many outrigger paddlers techniques over the years with some going from being complete "newbies" in the sport to placing Top 3 in International Events.

But you're right...anyone can just paddle! You don't need to learn and you don't need a lesson at all. It's like surfing...you don't need a lesson for that do you? Surely it's not that hard ?? Just stand up and go.

It's just how far you want to develop you personal skills. We all want to learn..thats why we're all members of this forum...to learn ... otherwise we'd be like the experienced guys and girls... just out there doing it. And using our mobiles and private email to contact our mates instead.

Hey Aussiewahine,
I have a good idea, if you video a session and sell it on dvd. Wouldnt need to be high quality. Just gives an option for those in other states and overseas.
What do you rekon?

Scott

Hey Scotty..I thought of that. Haven't spoken to Woogie about it. I think the good thing with clinics is the individual "hands on" and "one on one" coaching you get. You can watch heaps of videos and think you're doing ok copying them. You think you're paddling well and like you're surposed to...until someone more knowledgable works with you and picks up all the details your missing.

I guess it's like being coached in any sport..swimming/gymnastics etc. It's an ongoing mission to improve. The other option is to video yourself and send it in for analysis. I've technique coached outrigging for over 10 years and it's amazing how many people think they are paddling correct and doing everything you're telling them until they see themselves on video. Even then some still think they are doing it perfectly until you start pointing out all the flaws and "freeze frame" the stroke on play back. And then it's amazing how much improvement you see in them.

But yes..I'll mention it to Woogie. Maybe instead of filming the clinics he could do an instructional video and then demonstrate the most common errors people have.

Thanks for your reply Scotty.

What about this for an idea

Look for cheap air flights down to Victoria, NSW, SA or WA - put a package together with Accommadation, airport transfers and clinics in both surf and distance SUP Paddling. Clinic could be 2 days 2 hrs long for each criteria get the SUP community in each area paying $$$ for the clinic to cover Woogie to get down your way.

Accom could be at some ones house and transfers could be someone picking him up - all you would have to pay for is air flight and clinic - or work it in with an event in your area.

Put down dates that might suit - and work with airlines to get cheap flights.

Just an idea - then if youhave questions you can ask direct to him.

Yep kiakaha I rekon you idea has merit especially for Melbourne. In Adelaide I rekon I would maybe be the only one interested. The SUP bug is slow to catch on here.

Good idea about the video. I am going to try to do it like DJ did.

If you're going to video yourself the best way is for someone to video you. Particularly from direct side so the "catch" and "exit" can be clearly seen as well as body rotation/twist.

Also from either behind or in front to see angle of blade and recovery of stroke. We usually have someone in a tinny or boat buzzing around the outriggers filming but from side of the shore is good. Do a few efforts/sprints also as technique often changes when stroke rate is increased.

Yeah probably just you and me scotty (when i could get to Adelaide) but you never know if someone like onboard got on and advertised it then maybe something could happen.

If not then sending a video might be the best way at the moment.

Cheers

Way ahead on the video idea gang, have already spoken with Woogie at work today and we are going to put together an instructional paddling dvd. I,ll probably do most of the filming and my son Ryan will edit the raw footage into a real neat package, we'll get it done and out quick as there really seems to be a lot of interest out there...........Stuey

Man you guys have got it good. I hope everyone takes advantage of the classes because with a good stroke and understanding the SUP thing is funner. With Woggie teaching you all should be mean paddling machines. Way cheap the classes and too bad there are none here in Hawaii. The video thing is a good idea and my only input on it is too make sure it is indepth and easily understood by a 2nd grader. None of these wait til series 2 or 3 on DVD to get the answers. Give the full ball of wax on the 1st. I am down for at least 10 copies or more.

Aloha

Byron

P.S. Stuey should give a copy of the DVD as complimentary gifts for every penetrator he sells.
