As a young fella doing Surf Life Saving I was told I wasn't allowed to paddle ski's til after I was 16 or 17 and stayed on the prone boards til then. I was told this was to look after my growing teenage back and make sure I didn't develop a hunch like some guys around the club had.

Does this hold any merit or was it just rubbish. If its true how does that relate to young guys and girls stand-up paddling.

Anyone... ?

I've been competitive kayaking since the age of 14 (now 46) and my back is pretty much screwed, largely due to having very little lower back arch from sitting down paddling my whole life. I was in pretty much constant pain with some highs and lows

Took up SUP paddling last year. If I SUP paddle 2-3 times a week I no longer have a back issue at all. I also still paddle once a week.

So I guess in answer to your question, yes sit down paddling can contribute to back issues over a long period of time however I believe from my experience at least that this would not be the case with SUP paddling, although who knows if that will be the same for shoulders and wrists etc.

i think it's pretty much bull, i paddle a surf ski on occasion, have been since i was 16, i wasn't allowed to before this and then so it was mostly on flat water for a couple of months before i went into surf, it's probably that they don't want people younger than that using or handling surf skis as they are rather large and some people are rather small, just controling and carrying it more so. the only person with a "hunchback" is our irb captain and thats cause he doesn't lift **** properly, in concluion i don't think it'll screw your back up if your taught properly, it's just that they dont want young people handling skis

Thank's for your input guys. I always think proper technique and a balanced stretching regime goes a long way to overcome most of these issues.

Hope young Mr Baxter's got some good recovery stretching program given that unusual technique of his and his age
