Piros is heading there in a couple of weeks. He's done a heap of research on the place, surrounding islands and culture. Shoot him through an email, I'm sure he could steer you in the right direction!

Yes I am from PNG. Based in Port Moresby and I SUP every day. Unfortunately I am about the only one but we are expecting Piros and his crew soon.

We have very seasonal surf conditions here. Port Moresby where I am is on the South coast and our surf season runs from April-November-ish. On the North coast and the New Guinea Islands its more or less the opposite. But they get much better waves up there.

I have been doing lots of downwinders and inter-island paddling. Last weekend it was glassy calm and I did a 15 mile paddle to Daugo (Fishermans) Island which is a first for solo paddle craft as far as I know. This morning we had a big session out at Taurama beach with the surf club. Got a few waves but it was very windy so I swapped to my shortboard halfway through.

Where are you going to be and what sort of board are you thinking of bringing? There are lots of nice spots to paddle and you can do some good fishing or snorkling off your SUP too.

Feel free to ask any specific questions

I just got back from Lihir.
Awesome spot. Theres a few small waves I saw around the Gold mine and I know a few of the expats have shortboards there.
I would be tempted to take a longer board so you could do some paddlin when the wind comes up. IMO
You will love it. Very friendly locals but when you read the local paper there is definitly a high crime rate. I was in a security gaurded camp so Im guessin it was not a real indcation but I loved it.
Enjoy

Hi DTM, I've been to Madang a few times, it is a really nice relaxed area. I've not surfed at Tupira before but our surf club in Port Moresby (Sero Beach Boardriders) is having a weekend there next month. Regarding that FYI I hear it is booked out on the weekend of the 13th Nov!

I have been asking the guys what the break is like and Andy tells me it is a nice clean wave that has a channel running right next to it for an easy paddle out. There are rocks nearby so make sure your leggie is 100% or you might bang up your board.

here is a website with more info http://www.worldsurfaris.com/surf-travel/Papua-New-Guinea/Tupira-Surf-Club-Madang/info/boat-package.aspx?wsID=163

If you PM me your email address I can send you the Tupira rates and booking card. You will probably need to hire a car and possibly driver to get there from Madang. You could take the bus but i wouldnt recommend it. It'd be safe enough but pretty unreliable and slow.

Hope this helps.

Happy to oblige. PNG is truly an undiscovered, unspoiled paradise. Here are some more Tupira pictures.

Hi Guys

I am on the surfing association of papua new guinea committee, I spend most of my time on seabreeze lurking in the kitesurfing forums. lobes told me about the discussion here so i thought i would post my thoughts.

Of the three main surfing destinations in PNG Kavieng, Vanimo and Madang you will find lots of fun SUP action.

Kavieng, the most popular spot for australian surfers it has the least consistent surf in PNG, they get great waves but you do have to get out and go look for them. The upside is that a lot of the waves are very longboard friendly too. The best aspect about kavieng is that is has the most established tour operators, they will go out of their way to make sure you find what you are looking for. The islands and lagoons around kavieng offer heaps of protected water so you can go for long safe paddles just to enjoy the scenery. the lodges and charter boats are happy to sit down with you and plan a down winder with lunch stops and a pick up at the end.

Vanimo, is more of a village stay, so it will feel a bit more like a camping holiday. dont be scared about this, the local crew have been looking after international guests for many years and go all out to keep you happy. Vanimo has both lefts and rights peeling off either side of the point, so you can always get a wave no matter the swell direction. the right is a better long board wave while the left spits a really nice barrel. we have just opened up two new surf clubs between vanimo and the indo boarder, which have a similar waves to vanimo and are well worth checking out. there are bays and points all along the coast here and i am sure the intrepid SUP'er could discover a new spot and be the first to surf it.

Madang (tupira), the newest addition to the PNG surf scene and my fav spot (those are my kids hanging from the tree and my brother in the red boardies in the pics above). its a village stay as well, the guest house is out of the village and right on the break. the guest house is big and roomy and only 8 months old. The wave forms on the inside of a big bay, its a short right, with long boarders working the easier second take off point and short boarders going for the steeper first take off to hopefully make it through the barrel. the wave follows a deep channel so pulling off and getting back out is really easy. there are a few other waves further north, a left hander 15 min drive away which has a longer run and well worth getting to. if there is a big swell running a down winder from the left hander back to tupira will be sensational. the village has good trailer boat which you could hire to follow you.

Airniugini - should look after you with your board - they have an agreement to load surf boards at no charge. when flying domestic make sure you are booked on a F100 plane (most flights are) if you get down graded to a Dash 8 you are stuffed as they dont take anything longer than 6ft.

there is so much to explore here beyond the established surfing destinations. Rabaul, you could paddle around the harbour, checking out all the WWII japanese wrecks and the volcanoes that surround the town. they get good waves too, but they roll up on reef that is a little shallow for my liking. Tufi with its mad fjords and waterfalls. or Try Milne bay and catch some of the standing waves that form up between the islands when the tides are ripping.

I am keen to paddle down one of the big rivers, sepik, fly or kikori. the locals reckon the crocs are not interested in us..... but i dunno they are freakin big crocs

hope some of that is useful.
