Beautiful boards there. Love the wooden PSH. Interesting that ULI had a display there. What's the idea with the little wings on the side fins of those LSD boards - they bring back memories of Ben Lexon.

Those fin wings have been around for years.. I even have an old MuliFins fin that's almost identical.

I think the idea is to keep the fins/tail in the water when the tail might bounce out and the fins break free.. or maybe it's a nose riding thing.. I'm not sure if they work.

They would have more drag.. They would be much more safer (without that pointy sharp fin tip).. and they sure look cool..

I am yet to read the official FCS info on these fins but from what I understand the theory is based on real wings. The type that hold planes in the air.

Take a look at the new airbus 380, in designing a wing with enough lift to carry the plane but were limited to width to be able to land at existing major airports they had to change the wing. This more relates to side fins, centre fins have neutral lift.

On the ends of any fin/wing you have 2 factors that limit its performance, 1/ surface disturbance by your board which limits the effectiveness of the first 1/4 inch or so upwards or downwards from your board. 2/Tip vortex; Check the old pics of the H2 in the water tank the spiral away from the tip is the vortex.

The winglets on an Airbus as well as a FCS fin stop the vortex off the tip and mean more of the fin blade is effective. They estimate that you can reduce the size of a wing/fin by 10% by adding winglets, this reduces drag as you have a smaller, more effective fin with the same amount of lift as a bigger fin.

In the surf they mean a little less slide, and more of a momentum feel that keeps you moving forward through dead sections etc. They feel good in the wash as well. I had a quad once with 2 of the 3D red tip rear fins with H2 fronts. Looked really weird, felt surprisingly normal and fast. Just dont try to slide the tail. The airbus needs the winglets to achieve the lift with the wing dimensions available. You need to ride these fins to see if they feel better to you.

The Multifin version of this was modelled from John Harris' fin in the 80's also.

Great Pics DavidJohn. It was good to meet you and put a face (less moustache) to the name. It's amazing how different you look without the mo.

For all guys based in Melbourne we are looking at having an ULI demo day post Christmas/NY. We have the Gerry Lopez GL X-1, 10' & 11' Steamrollers for people to have a go on.

Obviously it's dependant on numbers but I welcome any expressions of interest.

Location will be around St Kilda or Port Melb.

Cheers

Great shot's - thanks so much for sharing.

Does anyone know anything about the multi colour striped board in the photo's ?

Is that a traction for 2010 on a few models or the look on one particular model ?

Can't seem to locate anything on the Starboard site and my wife definately wants this look (as a lady would).

I had a go on the Starboard 7'11 at Mambo. I rode it one morning at Short Point. It was a little choppy and about shoulder - head high. I found it a little wobbly and fell off a fair bit trying to get over waves. Once on a wave it went pretty well. Turned on a dime and you dont have to move your feet around so much. I didnt spend a lot of time on it, but I guess your balance would get better the more you use it. The pay off is a board that acts more like a shortboard once you get into a wave.

I also had a quick go out the front of the comp. It was glassy and tiny. It was much easier to stand on and get onto the waves.

I think most new Starboards are available in 'Candy' coloured deck grip.

The candy colour was developed for the girls.. and it looks like it worked..

thanks for the rave corey

the 7'11 looks like one of the sweetest short round nosed sup shapes i've seen to date (well on paper and in photos anyway)

not to skinny, not to wide, no funny lookin dumps on it and enough litreage to float a XL half animal half machine "like my good self"

looks like starboard are bringing out some sh1t hot short sup weapons with the 7'4, 7'11, 8' and new 8'5 pro

dont think that the candy is my colour thou

but homeally recons his candy sets off his eyes......lol............

Hey Fab.. I met your partner down at St Kilda today and he had his electric air pump for his Uli.. Isn't that cheating..

btw.. There never was a mo.. It was just the T handle of my paddle and trying to do a Ned Flanders with the mo and glasses..

Also.. I think St Kilda might be a better location for your Uli demo day and maybe tee something up with the SupBus guys.

Thanks DJ

Yeh, i know it was the paddle and not a genuine mo. It still made you look very different. I didn't imagine you being so tall and lean.

The electric pump is cheating. It's more for high volume stuff. My partner is just a lazy prick who loves his toys.

It only takes about 3-4 minutes to inflate manually and it's a great warm up before you hit the water.

The SupBus guys were interested in looking at the ULI's so we will get to them eventually. Our demo day will be a pretty informal one so we'll see how we go.

Cheers
