Might be a good idea for those that pimp a brand by making repeated posts on such a brand, with photos etc. if they disclosed their association with the brand that they're talking up.

Might make it clear to those reading the posts (and who are not aware of the associations) that they should take into account the association when reading the post, particularly where such reader is evaluating the product discussed in the post as a possible purchase.

Disc. I own a 903 PSH ripper, that I want to sell.

Are.. You.. Talking.. To Me???....

I'm not in the industry for those who may think I am.. I still pay for my own boards and paddles.. SHQ (the leading SUP shop here in Melbourne) have been great to me with whatever I may want.. They don't ask anything in return.. I choose to put a SHQ sticker on my boards and paddles as a way of saying thanks and because I'm proud to be associated with SHQ.. The brands that I choose to use are my own choice and not for any other reason..

Agree. Some posts are obviously from shop owners, sponsored riders and dealers etc but its not always the case or easily identified.
Maybe those with interests could put at the bottom of the post;

x brand Sponsored rider.
x brand Dealer.
x Shop owner.

What do you think Laurie?

What I have seen on here doesn't bother me personally. If I don't like a post, I either:

1. Won't read it or ignore it or
2. will express my opinion (not use gutless red thumbs).

Personally I am so sick of rules and regulations ATM (we just had council close our local bike track).

This forum within reason, seems to regulate itself with the exception of complete nutbags like BP.

If people buy product based on a few forum posts without trying it themselves they are pretty naive. Same as walking into a shop and getting the sales pitch - you take it with a grain of salt.

Yeah BUT-it gets a little over the top with the number of posts and images pushing particular brands when those doing it are associated with the brand and it's part of their 'deal' that they promote the brand-and you may think it naive for a buyer to rely on such noise, BUT it all goes into the mix for a buyer and you're underestimating the reach and influence of Seabreeze-AND it's all part of the marketing for the brand-be good to know that X is posting on a brand and that they are doing so because of what that brand gives back to them for their work. Kinda' al a Alan Jones and all that.

Case in point (and as an example ONLY) is JB and his SPSC post-those not in the know wouldn't know his association with Windgenuity and Naish. And, I value his opinion, but am aware of the association with the brand, others may value the opinion and not be aware of the association.

Seems fair enough to me.

Great idea, and tried it, but soon found that once shops have "signatures" advertising their brands, the one word posts per login goes up, so not a fan of signatures.

I'm guessing this is about JB's recent post regards the Naish?

My 2c is that it's a grey area, and I'd rather that we (as admins of the site) err on the side of "pimping", rather than "deleting".

i.e.
- If you're interested in that model, it's great info.
- If you sell a competing brand, it's pimping.
- If you've had a run-on with the brand, then you may still carry hard feelings towards them.

Usually, how you read a post is based on where your interests lie....*

Enjoy .. Lozza

* My interests lie in having a great community where we can share.

** For the conspiracists, no advertiser ever has, or ever will, guide the admin of this forum. Been running this site/forum for >10 years, and you don't last that long by playing silly buggers.

Well and true Luarie-there's no need to introduce signatures-people can do that anyway (e.g. Steve McCormack and kitepower).

BUT it would serve Seabreeze well to request sponsored riders to disclose their association when reviewing product.

How does it go "sunlight is the best disinfectant" or something like that...?

Well said Laurie.

Further to that, I would hate to see sponsored riders discouraged from commenting or interracting on this forum due to the delicate sensibilities that some people have towards the commercial world we live in. Currently this sport is amazing in that newcomers can speak freely with pros and receive invaluable advice and guidance. Let's not cut that link.

And one more thing - the SPSC thread that appears to have inspired this pimping issue - JB is very clear in that he is merely advising people to go demo the Naish board. And beyond that, he makes it extremely clear that the board is only suited to experienced short SUP board riders. So what we have here is a sponsored rider telling experienced surf riders who happen to be in the market for a new short board, to go demo the Naish. If any lurker who doesn't understand JB's association with Naish goes ahead and buys the new 8'5" without testing it, then he/she is going against JB's message in the first place.

No harm, no foul I say.

I kind of agree Loco.

While the input of many of the people that do this kind of thing can be far too valuable to stop I for one feel that credibility of the post is increased if you understand the background of the poster.

Eg, if you understand that X is a team rider for Company Y there is reason other than being a forum brand pimp that X gets a deal of whatever magnitude from Y. X is being looked after because X presumably has some ability, experience or influence.

IMO repeated posts about certain companies or shops without disclaimers by the poster is harmful to the business in general. These forums are full of lurkers and trolls at so many levels I think we would all be blown away if we understood the influence.

Then again anonymity is a great thing to encourage free discussion.

Disclaimer: I sell surfing products, I do not however sell or represent anything for SUP. My career goal is to never wear shoes and to stay close to my passions however so I am not ruling it out just yet.

Yeah I'm with you guys. there has been so much blatant pimping on this site from day one and the same culprits get away with it constantly so I say open it up and make it a free for all. If its a topic or brand that interests you then read it and if it aint then simply do not click open the topic and ignore it. If you are stupid enough to make a purchase solely on what you read in these forums and don't do your own homework and try different boards/paddles then so be it - its your money..

BTW - I do work in the industry and I will talk up a product that I like and give any credit where it is due to any brand, whether I represent it or not. At the end of the day I do not HAVE to promote a particular brand/model and as I say I will only really post my thoughts on a product if its something I like and my mates/family like and then that info is out there for anyone to take as they please. It bothers me little if people don't agree with my thoughts/opinions because at the end of the day they are simply MY thoughts and opinions and isn't this what the breeze forum is all about - "personal expression"

Happy Days are here again on the Breeze

Guys just got home from an all dayer. Had a fun sup this morning on the beachies at Broadbeach for a few hours, untill the NE smashed in then Kite Surfed untill 3, happy days now to talk some **** on the net untill its cool enough to Mow the grass .

Every body has a valid point on this topic but who really cares who's pimping what I'm with Goatman .Quote (If people buy product based on a few forum posts without trying it themselves they are pretty naive. Same as walking into a shop and getting the sales pitch - you take it with a grain of salt) i believe the forums is a great place to get the brands out there which is magic for all us guys that want to see and try every thing but seeing for your self what these boards can do is what sells them, for example Jbs Vid, the board you have to admit it dose look good and a 120kg Guy LOL (95kg) surfing this board in 1 ft chop no worries makes me think this could be a sweet board.
I ride a Naish 8'0 and for me its the board if i can find something else on the market like it i would love to give ago.

Ps how come no one red thumbs laurie lol

cheers

Remedy for this topic:

1) Take one large glass and fill with water.

2) Go to hardware store and buy 1 bag quickset concrete.

3) Add quickset to glass of water in proportion to volume.

4) Stir until required texture is achieved.

5) Drink down and toughen the F%$# UP PRINCESSES!

I own Sea Me Surf Photography Kristi's Business and supply images to Aust Paddle Surfer, Aust Longboarder and other magazines, News Papers and sell images through various galleries etc etc etc.

I am not sponsored by anyone nor is Kristi.

Kialoa recently gave Kristi a Pipes Paddle to try to get some feedback from someone in the target market it was designed for.

I love ridding my PSH Gun, my DC 9.4 and thats my 2 board quiver.

Kristi loves her 8.0 Naish, 8'9 Imperial and 12'6 Dean Snow Airwave.

Thats 5 different brands to pimp wow we love options.

If we get great service we talk it up on the forum, if we get bad service we talk to the shop

We will help out with anything that promotes the sport and helps out beginners.

I post pics of my Kids Supping because I am a proud dad and love getting on the water with them.

If I like something I say so if I dont I also say so!

I think the red thumb function is a total wank!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Check out my post from more than two years ago.. Not much has changed.. You can see that even back then I was pimping Naish.. Croc's and Coke..

Here.. www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=36165

I've only ever been involved seriously with one other forum before SeaBreeze and it was a motorcycle forum.. It was a one brand and one model forum (the 02 BMW R1150R)..and I was praised for my ride reports where I would take pictures along the way on a ride.. My bike was always in the pics.. If I posted 20 pics it was basically 20 pics of my bike with a different background in each shot.. Having my bike in the shot seemed to add something IMO making it more than just a normal pic.. I never thought for a second that I was pimping my brand or model of bike back then and I feel the same way now with pics of my Naish boards and Kialoa paddles.

Not long ago when I posted my 'Island hopping' ( www.seabreeze.com.au/Forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=59790 ) post I could have taken all those pics without my board or paddle in the pics but I don't think it would be the same and having my board a paddle in the pics also adds something.

I'm really looking forward to posting about a surfing trip or a great wave session and I'm sure you'll see plenty of pics of my 'AirWave' board that I paid Dean Snow to make for me.. Although it's yellow it's not a Naish.

Also I've been helping a local guy develop a new paddle that I think will be called the V blade and I'm sure you'll soon see pics of me using it even though I have Kialoa stickers on my boards.

If a newbie asks what board he should buy you will probably get people like me saying Naish are good.. Jonathan saying Starboards are good.. Phill saying DC's are good.. Simon saying C4's are good.. etc etc.

I don't see a problem with that and IMO that's what forums are all about and shouldn't be called pimping IMO.. It's just each persons personal opinion..

DJ

I actually agree with OG (suprise) that the thumb thing is a total wank and I believe it should be removed from the forum. the whole idea I thought was to post your thoughts and comments and ideas etc and if you have got nothing to say about a topic then just S.T.F.U !!! and move on. If you have something to say or don't agree then post it and have your two bobs worth - get some balls and get involved and stop hiding behind a mouse click on the red thumb. Why the hell are we given the option to vote with a thumb on what someone says - we aren't here for votes we are here for expression. To me the thumbs are just a w.o.f.t and detract from the topic at hand.
Really the only thing that pissses me off with the pimping is when someone posts a question about a particular board and the usual suspects always jump on and give an endless blurb about every board under the sun EXCEPT the board that was enquired about. I believe that if you can make a constructive comment about the board enquiry then by all means do so but if you know nothing about the board then you have no right to say anything really and if you really want to pimp your sup then send the person a pm with your suggestions.
