G'day All, My name is Mike, Newbie to the Sport. I've had a couple of lessons up in North Queensland and have now moved to Adelaide with the family, Glenelg area. Have finally bought a board & paddle and looking for nice calm places before heading onto the more exposed Bay/Onshore areas whilst I develop my basic skills etc... Any suggestions where might be a good area for this? Cheers for the Help!

Try West Lakes, head 10 minutes North of Glenelg,

OR

Try the Onkaparing River in a full tide, about 30 minutes south of you,

I just did a day of clinics at Glenelg right behind the marina to the north. Perfect.
Also mornings were perfect in the ocean till the wind picked up

Yep as Pete menioned, if you're in Glenleg you can't go past the Patawalonga river. Great scenery from boats to houses to spoilt little rich girls walking thier chihuahuas
From Glenelg it's 30 mins to the Onkaparinga which is generally only a high tide option in the lower reaches or West Lakes 10 - 15mins North.
If you want anything more than a couple of K's in paddle length, I'd suggest West Lakes where you can view the spoilt little rich girls wealthy grandmothers in their natural tanning environment...their back yard!

Another vote for the Pat just north of the bridge (100m) on the east or west side there are a couple on nice sandy spots. When you are keen to head out off the beach try Seacliff out from BSYC. Great area to paddle and can be a bit more sheltered if you keep in close to the land. Just watch it on very low tide can get super shallow.

Also check out the SA SUP crew Facebook page if you are keen to meet up with others

Cheers guys, have sent the friend requests through on Facebook, looks to be a great community out there. Il head down to the pat , looks great and just around the corner. If you see a guy falling off more than average, come say hi...it's most likely me!
