Weiry, my new Naish came with a stainless steel screw with a rubber ring.

Picked it up just before Xmas and is a 2014 model.

Maybe you lucked out? I reckon you could get a repalcement screw.

One of my previous boards had a plastic vent plug in it, it worked fine. On the rare occasions I took it out I didn't mind being able to use a 10c coin instead of having to hunt for/remember the right sized screwdriver.

The Gore-Tex plugs are a different animal - they need a special "base" insert in the board...fitting the plug is a socket job, not a screwdriver job - the Gore plug doesn't have a screwdriver slot in the head, because of the way the breather is designed. The base gives clearance around the plug to fit the socket over it.

See:

No.. Plastic/nylon.. I think if rather the plastic.

Looks like the same replacement plastic plug that you can replace the GorTex plugs with.. That's why I'm thinking that a GorTex plug might fit .. Plus a coin is often easier to find than a screw driver.. plus plastic can't rust.

The Gore-Tex plugs are a different diameter to a "standard" vent plug. The one on the left is a stock Gore plug, the one on the right is from from my (older) Naish. It's the same size as in my Starby and the plastic one that was in my WoW:

They won't go in the same hole (said the actress to the bishop )

Wondering if Naish have a different diameter plug hole now? DJ I've got a couple of spare Gore plugs, I'll keep them in the car for next time I see you, can give it a try.

The plastic insert is a valve as opposed to a plug. Set and forget. It may not look as solid as a screw but it is way more reliable when it comes to balancing out the air pressure in your board. You just need to get used to bubbles coming out of it when you first put the board in the water on a hot day

stick on logos, plastic plugs. next thing you'll be saying your board is made out of foam and epoxy when you thought it should be solid stainless steel

The plastic one is lighter and can be tightened with a coin - so imho it's the better option.....I've never had a failure on either.

Hi mate,
The DC/NSP has the Gore-Tex breather plug. There shouldn't 't be a need to remove it but a socket is required if you do, rather than a screwdriver. Some folks advocate flushing the plug with fresh water occasionally to prevent salt build up, dunno how necessary that is but i usually rinse my boards before they're put away so it happens anyway.

I built a Kaholo 14 and as an addition I built a small water proof hatch into the fore deck to gain access to to a small locker. Good for phone, flares wallet etc. I bought one of the gore tex vents and drilled a small hole and tapped it for thread and epoxied it in (to the removable hatch lid). Simple system nothing to forget.
Then I bought a Starboard All star as the SUP bug got its claws into me! Thus began the "tyranny of the vent". It seems these things are only vents until you forget it once and then it becomes a drain. Surely a permanent solution such as a Gore tex vent or maybe even two could be built in and then the tyranny of the vent would end!!

I know its easy to get in a routine after a while . Hopefully you still have a dry board when you finally get used to opening and closing the damn thing. It doesn't help when a search of the forums turns up equal amounts of the " I never touch it" and " My board exploded" stories.

My two cents worth for what it is or isn't worth.

I have had several different boards over the years both with and without vents.

My original board (eight years old) is a Southpoint Kalama model. No vent at all, no structural damage and no explosions, used and abused by all and sundry to this day.

My SurfSUP is a 9'6" Fanatic Allwave, 18 months old, no vent at all, no structural damage or explosions. extensively used but also cared for.

My tourer is a 2014 Naish Glide with a stainless steel vent screw. I never touch it. The board is used extensuively but very well cared for as I am not wealthy.

Boards that I have had in the past (2) both with plastic and steel vent screws I have had no issue with and also have never touched the vent screws. I don't know if this is the right thing or not but was advised (by dealer) to keep them out of the direct sun for long periods and if I did this there would be no need to ever touch the vent screw.

Who knows what is right?

I just paddle them and love it.

Enjoy.

Maybe I can bring myself to leave it in and be done with it except for maybe the hottest days of the year. The boards carbon fibre so surely it can withstand a little pressure from air heating up.

A lot of new boards are coming out without vent plugs.. It depends on the type of foam core.. how the board's made.. and also the volume of the board.

I've heard that Starboard and Naish are going to stop using them.. They used to be needed for airline freight.. but not any more.

hardly any clubbie board that they have been making for decades has or have had vent screws. some manufacturers believe you compromise the construction by putting vent plugs in.

its not the end of the world as we know it

My fanatic Allwave doesn't have a vent screw, it seems to be living a happy and productive life without one.

This years models have re-inserted the screw, probably expect they had some issues being screw-less as it were

I have 2 Fanatics - a 10' Fly and 8'10" Allwave and neither has a vent hole. No problems with either so far. Excellent boards.

But I do have a sailboard that has a Goretex Vent and it needs replacing. Waiting on one from NZ for 5 weeks now.

Looks like I was right.. .. I checked it out yesterday and took these pics.. A gortex plug fits perfectly.

It's very clever of Naish because it gives people the option of using a gortex vent plug if they choose to..

You can't do that with a metal one.. .. and a 10c coin is perfect screwdriver..

For those who don't know.. A normal vent plug has a screw driver slot.. and a gortex vert plug doesn't.

Does anyone know where I can get a replacement plastic screw for a X32 ?
Or better still, what size and thread it is?
I'm trying to check if I have a crack under thedeck pad, and wanted to attach a hand vacume pump with guage to check if it's water tight

Cheers

Most sup shops will carry spare vent screws, good shops will have a few types. They are definitely available as a spare part from Naish, so just ask your local dealer for one.
