Anyone know of a good polystyrene glue, the one at coast foam costs $20.00 for 500ml and I would need about 3 of them. I don't want to use epoxy resin because when you are shaping, the foam tears out. Has anyone tried liquid nails.

Epoxy resin with microspheres added would be the best weight/strength. Not sure it would be the cheapest but assuming you are making a board, it would be pretty cost effective relative......

The secret to gluing styro foam together with epoxy resin, is to wipe the resin to both sides that are to be joined, then wipe all of the epoxy off. This leaves a thin film that is real easy to shape. Afterall epoxy is a superior glue, unlike polyester.
I also put into the mix a TINY bit of thixotrope, EG cabosil or R2O2, this makes the resin a bit like vaseline.
PVA glues don't work as the water base does not get absorbed, it just dries out at the edges and when you shape the joint falls apart.

If there any gaps after gluing with epoxy, the seal coat usually fills them.

I'm assuming u are gluing the blanks together, or gluing a stringer in.

We just use epoxy resin with a bit of Q seal which makes it into a thicker paste.

The trouble with microspheres and Qcells are that they are glass balloons and harder more brittle than epoxy resin. They also take the smeariness out of the resin, sort of dry it out. The reverse happens with cabosil.

I'm talking about just gluing the blanks together so it doesn't matter about the 'smearness' u just brush it on each side.

It's not like u can see wat it looks like onces it done anywayz

Hi all

Thanks for the replies, I'll probably go with epoxy resin. Will keep you posted with the project.

Clarky we just use Selleys Polyurethane woodworking glue its one of those semi expanding glues that stays fairly soft allowing you to shape it nicely without chips coming off and tearing into your work.......Stuey

Hey Stuey

I ended up using a type of contact, especially designed for polystyrene foam.

Yeah matey, there are a lot a different methods of joining the stuff it's not that crucial just as long as it stays together and you don't have a big hard glue line to mess with your shaping. I have a couple photos of my latest 18' on my profile page, it may give you some ideas. Good luck and I'm keen to hear how you go.......Stuey
