G'day all. We are off to the Gold Coast and Byron Bay in February next year. I have surfed around Greenmount, Burleigh Heads, and at Byron Bay on a longboard but have never ridden a SUP there. I have heard that the locals can be quite unwelcoming to SUP riders in certain areas any thoughts and suggestions

kingy main beach has some fat righthanders. fingal courseway if it is small would be fun on high tide. stay away from snapper if you go to the points on one. little marley down can be fun and less crowded. if your going into the shark den, Ballina, try that fat wave boulders.

Probably the weekend locals that have the attitude, and with the whole area a melting pot of people from every where, its possible anyone could be in a bad mood. I wouldn't worry about it and just use the usual common sense and have fun.

If you are compitent and in control of your board you can surf most spots without any issues
Alot of newby surfers starting on stand ups as their introduction to surfing and its quite chaotic
Be aware of the crowds and try to surf away from them . If you go out in a busy line up your asking for it !!

I've surfed all those spots and in 15 years never had any agro. With the SUP I find it best just to moved down the line until you find a bit of a patch for yourself.

spot on comment SM74. If you can hold your own in the likes of Snapper etc, then you will get a reasonable level of respect. If you can't, then forget it.........these are not places to learn to SUP
