Hello,

I am about to purchase a Starboard Drive. I have seen the Tufskin surface but cannot find anyone who has the 'Star Touch' grip.

Has anyone used the 'Star Touch' board and if so did you find it had enough grip for surfing?

I am a beginner in SUP although have surfed for some years.

Any comments on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Scott.

Startouch has plenty of grip but in my opinion you need deck grip - especially if you are just starting out cos you will spend some time on your knees and deck grip will also give you a bit of protection to other parts of your body when it goes wrong. The star touch models are cheaper but it is well worth spending the extra money and going tufskin with the full grip and when you upgrade in the future the tufskin will have better resale value because 99% of the sup population prefer deck grips on their boards. If you contact scotty at greenline I am sure he will have a board in star touch that you can try to see if you really like it before you spend any money

Further to what Billboard said, the startouch grip can actually take the skin off your knees. It's like very fine sand paper. But it works really well on your feet in my opinion.

My son has the star touch Drive and I have the deck grip. The grip is seriously better.

The boy is buying a 9'8" and has specified deck grip.

That is really good advice. Thank you for helping me with this. I was considering the cheaper option but I will definitely go with the tufskin now.

Thanks again,

Scott.

I'm not a big fan of Tufskin. It gets really dirty really easily. Any contact from yuor hand or putting it down on the ground results in finger prints or dirty marks.

It's supposed to be softer and more durable than a polished finish but I'm not sure that is true. It's still a paint coating.

I was able to polish out all the paddle marks but I still got a few scratches and chips.

I would tend to go for the hard finish because it repels marks and stuff better. I've always had good luck with hard finished surfboards and kiteboards.

I'm not a big fan of deck pads for the same reason. You get all sorts of cuts and chops in them and I hear all the stories of pads peeling off (although that has not happened to me.)

My current board is a custom with a bare paint pro-finish (lightly sanded and unpolished) with no deck pad. Very robust and resistant to chipping. That is great with booties for grip. The only problem is that my bare hand is quite slippery on the deck so grabbing the board and getting going after being caught inside is a touch more difficult. I may add some kind of texture to the deck if I get excited about it. At the moment it is rarely a problem (just don't get caught by the white water )

My understanding is that the 2009 boards had the "startouch" finish and the 2010 range is called "bluetouch". I read somewhere the bluetouch is supposed to be slightly better grip wise. I have a bluetouch board and much prefer it to a deckpad but I have added a tailpad as my back foot slipped a couple of times. As others have said, it's pretty abrasive on bodyparts other than your feet. I have heard of people complaining about it being uncomfortable when standing for long periods as well but I don't find that up to 2-3hrs.

That is great, thanks guys.

I think the Star touch/Blue touch looks alot better but I will go with the tufskin just to save myself from those falls as I am very new to SUP.

Appreciate your feedback and comments.
