I saw him often on my rides to work, usually somewhere around St Kilda/Elwood jogging along in his speedos to or from his morning bay swim, in all weathers, smiling and looking like a sugar bag full of walnuts. I'd give him a wave and say "Hello Mr Hafey" and always get one back...couldn't ever bring myself to call him "Tom" or "Tommy", even into my 50s.

Similar story to davnom,
Was out at PtLeo at the end of summer a few years ago.
Everyone out there in steamers looking like they didn't really want to get wet.
Out from the beach on his surf ski came some bloke looking like Conan the Barbarian.
Paddling out 3 times as hard as anyone else on the water, and in speedos.
Stood out like a sore dick.
Sure enough, it was Tommy.
And like HC said, happy to say hello to anyone.
A great loss to not only the sporting world, but to the world in general.
We need more people like him.
