Race 1 Results...

SUP CLUB – May Social Race Series, Race #1, Saturday, May 14th

Rain, hail or shine we were keen to be out there. We pretty much had all of the above during the 2 lap social class, and 4 lap race class event. Not only this but paddlers also navigated some solid swell that was coming through St Kilda Pier at the top marker and a 20+ knot headwind at times as they battled to make the turn.

We were stoked at the enthusiasm and dedication shown by the field in the toughest conditions most would have ever paddled in, great job guys!

After a brief skippers meeting huddled in behind the SUP Bus, those brave paddlers that made it out for race 1 of the series navigated one of St Kilda's biggest shore breaks on memory as they fought their way out and around the first marker. From here it was a solid slog for just on a leg and a half of the triangular race circuit in St Kilda Harbour before some great runners allowed a small break if you could get on them with the chop going on out there.

Without a doubt the wave of the day had to go to Paul Nottage who made St Kilda Harbour look like a great Bells Beach swell. He enjoyed it so much in fact that he just about forgot there was a marker to go around and nearly went past it. Great wave mate!

In the end it was Cam Hoskings who came from behind to win the Race Class, while Matt Symonns took out the Social Class. Full results and times below!

Congratulations to everyone who participated, it doesn't get any tougher than that. We hope the conditions are much nicer next Saturday morning for the final race of the May season!

RACE CLASS RESULTS:

1. Cam Hoskings - 33:44
2. Paul Nottage - 34:43
3. Chris Sal - 35:00
4. Jarrad Collar - 43:08
5. Michael Lance - 53:19
6. Jean R Coyne - 54:40
7. Leo Dannies - 55:55
8. Ben Owzinsky, shot off to a great start on his knee style surf ski before having to leave early for a pre-arranged meeting.

SOCIAL CLASS RESULTS:

1. Matt Symonns - 48:36
2. Mick Evans - 51:20
3. Peter Cooper, very unlucky at the start as his board reached the end of the leash and nicked a rock breaking the water seal. We look forward to getting you out there next time in much better conditions!

Race 2, is next Saturday, May 21st. 9:00am registration at St Kilda Beach HQ in front of the St Kilda Seabaths at the Kite Republic HQ end. Hope to see you there!

Hi Mike.. We will make plans Friday once we know for sure what the conditions will be but I'm guessing 9.30-10am meet at Sandy.. It would be good if we could have the SupClub race as the down-winder but I guess we'll see.. btw.. We are doing one today if anyone's keen.. The forcast is 25 knots northerly and we have a few coming along.. We are meeting at Sandy at 10am.

I'm keen for 2 x StK to Sandy runs on Saturday as it looks like the wind will hold all day. Maybe make the second run Pt Ormond to Black Rock. StK traffic seems to be the biggest delay and the waves don't kick in until Pt Ormond most of the time.

Really? Bay Winds app didn't seem to clock over 20 knots at the Beacon or StK or Black Rock.

Yes I took a couple of pictures and wore my helmet cam GoPro..

It wasn't real strong but enough to get plenty of runners.

Looking like another tough battle out there for tomorrow morning, time to find out who Melbourne's toughest paddler is!

Rego will be at 9am in front of St Kilda Seabaths and we'll be aiming to kick off the race at 9:30am as posted earlier.

Looks like there will be a crew doing a downwinder after the race as well, if you're keen on tagging along on that make sure you bring a PFD along too.

See you bright and early paddlers!

Was looking like another windblown day out on the water leading up to Saturday morning. When we turned up however it looked great. We had a really nice protected area that the race circuit used just in front of the St Kilda Seabaths.

Hanging out waiting for the start...

As soon as the gun went off it was a sprint to round the first marker in front. Warrick from RPS, Jarad from Peak Adventure and Chris from Kite Republic were all neck a neck and hit the first upwind leg side by side. Ben and Matt contesting the social class took off fast while Leo, Mick and Con had a great battle going as well.

Off and racing up the first straight...

At the midway point 3 laps down it was Jarad narrowly leading from Chris with Warrick hot on their tail. As the wind picked up and the going got tougher and tougher it was Jarads kayaking fitness that got him over the line for the win. Chris came in narrowly behind, with Warrick in 3rd just ahead of Con. In the social class Ben got away from Matt to finish strongly on his prone board.

Warrick, Chris & Jarad

There was no doubting that the over 50 class was taken out by Leo tearing along on the 14 Fanatic Red Rocket, great work mate!

Congratulations once again to all the competitors. It was a fun morning with a great group of people and we look forward to the Race Series growing in momentum as we return on June 11th (TBC) for season 2.

The presentations for the May season winners will be held at the SUP CLUB Social Night at Republica (St Kilda Seabaths) on Tuesday, May 28th from 6pm.

Thanks Con, but its a pleasure just to turn up and be around such nice, helpful and like minded people (We're all nuts!). It's why I love the sport, though if you could paddle slower next time I could talk to you about it!
