Hey Aussie...Quick question..
Have a Naish 11'6 and am comfortable with the course distance in the river....i have only completed a few short (6k) downwind open ocean paddles....Any ideas if this format / weather conditions would be suitable for me, or is my board and experience lacking...

Hey Richard. Personally I think the Long Course would be a long haul on a board under 12'6" that isn't a race designed board. You could do it but it may take you over 2.5 hrs. It's 13.5km from the Cartwright Rock wall to Moffat Shark nets so probably 14km all up to the beach.

The problem with SUP in this series is that it's an outrigger series and they have included SUP into it a little last year but more so this year. They only have 2 or 3 safety craft following the race. (1 as a lead boat, 1 in the middle and 1 as a tail boat following the last paddler). The officials have no idea about the difference in speed between the SUP's and outriggers as they don't SUP (yet). They have only given the SUP a 15 min lead in the long course dispite my 30-45 min lead suggestion.

Last year for this race Woogie suggested only 14' and longer boards do the race which put me out by a week (the 14' Vortice arrived the next week). One lady did end up doing it on a 12' Laird in over 2 hrs (from just near Kawana Surf Club to Moffats). It would have taken her over 2.45 hrs for the whole distance. Last year the SUP's registered at the Spit and then drove to Buddina Beach Access 8 and started from there as the wind was too strong to paddle against to get from Mooloolaba Spit around Cartwright.

As you've managed to paddle 6km before now, I would suggest you go in the 8km short course (but that may be harder going in the 20kt NW predicted at present) unless you can borrow a race board from someone and then go in the Long Course.

It's a tough call because there aren't many SUP entering this series yet. If it were purely a SUP event with 30 other SUP boards under 12' then that would be a blast. But you may be the only one out there on the shorter board and you may be left a fair way behind.

Not sure if any of this has helped you make a decision. Actually I just had an idea ???

I will talk to Woogie tonight and see if he is going to be at the event. Maybe the boards under 12'6" could do the same as last year and start from say Kawana Surf Club. The Organisers won't mind. If you start at the same time as the longer boards (or 15 mins earlier) then you could get there in a similar time ??

A downwind is definately more fun than a triangle course on any board in high winds. I won't be there this weekend as I'm going overseas on Thursday so I'll see if Woogie can look after the SUP side of things like he did last year.

Stay tuned ...

No worries. Yes it's getting abit confusing now that there are 12'6" Race boards. I think there was a long discussion on here about that not so long ago. People saying it's not fair racing 12'6" stock boards against 12'6" race boards. Needs to be defined a bit better. But then some people like to just participate without expecting any result on the racing side of things.

Some of DJ's mates are doing long paddles down in VIC on standard boards but I don't think they are "racing" each other ?? Just having fun paddles.

Come down maybe and have a look and meet some of the gang. Maybe in the next couple of months we could organise a few longer downwinds with Coast paddlers as a social fun thing.

This was a great run last year, although the wind was NE, so a bit more cross-wind than down, but still lots and lots of bumps. None of us were on boards with rudders that time, and it was still do-able and lots of fun.
It's an excellent run when the wind is more N, so this weekend is looking good if the forecast stays as is. Starting at the top of Kawana would be good as well, then we might keep up with the OC's. Hopefully we get a few more people along this time!

Sue - is the MOCC shed on the river side next to the public boat-ramp?

Yes Stuart that's right. You can enter via the east side car park and walk to the Shed. I've made you a map below. Have a fun race. It's looking like good conditions.

The OC's usually do, so I would think the same applies for SUP?

Probably a good idea for all SUPs to be there by 1100 and register at MOCC shed so we can start earlier than the OC's, and move around to the top of Kawana if needed (5-10 minute drive). We did this last year and it saves paddling into a 20kt headwind at the start and getting even further behind the OC's.

Forecast is still looking good.
Did a run from Buddina to Moffats in yesterday mornings northerly and got some good runners, so if the forecast is right it should be a lot of fun.

Thanks heaps to all the crew who came along today and their drivers - definitely a great downwind run this time for a change. instead of no-wind or head-wind.

We had people from the Gold Coast, Brisbane and all over the Sunshine Coast. Good variety of race boards too, 12ft to 17ft, which got swapped around during the race: DC's, Naish, SIC and C4.

Not quite straight downwind, but lots of runners, especially after Woogie thoughtfully diverted us towards New Zealand for a while. After that it was downhill all the way to Moffats. Excellent run. Hopefully the next couple of races will have similar conditions.

Some low-res pics from today:

Yeah good day and fun had by all. Pity the race did not go ahead but was still fun to swap around boards. Good to see about 10 people turn up for the race. Lets hope we get that kind of wind for all the events..

Hey what happened ? Why didn't the race go ahead ? I'm in San Francisco at the moment. Competed in the Hennessey International yesterday around Alcatraz. It was so much fun.

So tell me what happened at Mooloolaba ??

There was a strong wind warning issued so insurance was the problem.

There has to be a way around this as this is when the fun just starts?

Jacko

Yeah it was a pity they had to cancel the race because of the wind warning - the conditions were great for a downwinder and it was heaps of fun for everyone who came and paddled.

Definately need to sort out the issue with insurance, otherwise we'll never get to race in the best conditions.

Here's hoping the next few races offer similar conditions and they'll be a lot of fun.

Yes unfortunately when the winds get over 25 knots in outrigger racing the insurnace company's no longer insure the events. I just saw this on the outrigger forum. I'll chase it up when I get home for those involved ...

For those who registered and paid for the Long Course, your fees will either be refunded or perhaps given a credit for a future race. Will get it sorted and let you know...Mooloolaba Outrigger Secretary
