Does it really make a difference? Will a board constructed like a Carbon fanatic fly 14 differ in speed to the standard version and by how much? I believe it could make a massive difference especially in flatwater, but are we talking 1min, 1km etc?

the big difference in perfromance i have come to realize is the Jockey , not the board.

I suggest the difference between a carbon construction and a heavier AST or wood construction of the same design will amount to less than 1km/h in speed.

I suggest that if you have done everything else to increase your weight to power ratio possible, taken a good sized dump in the morning, not carrying any excess weight at all on your body, wear lightweight clothing with little or no additional items, found an extremely light weight grip, leash etc etc etc than the 3 or 4 kgs extra or less or so in the construction of an identical board will make a difference to you. In other words probably nothing to most of us.

Saying all of that though, light boards do seem to sit higher in the water and are more reactive in the waves etc, in that sense they feel better but I have never tried 2 exactly identical boards in different weights to really know.

I think the best advice is make sure you have a dump if you are overly concerned.
