Traditionally Quick Blade and Kialoa have been the premium paddle brands with the board makers - Naish, Starboard and Fanatic following close behind with their top end paddles. More recently, Ke Nalu has been turning a lot of heads.

A lot of the paddles seem very small area. Im using a 9" Naish Mikana (or whatever its called : ) with an area of 120 odd sq " all the race ones seem to be sub 100?

Im a largish framed person with a slower stroke rate than most so im after a bigger area for a slower rating. . . Ke Nalu has a somewhat larger.... anyone tried it?

The 105 sq in Ke Nalu Molokai is a beast of a blade.
I love it but only use it for short to mid length races and some interval type training.
The blade shape and design has quite an influence on how much water you catch with each stroke.....so there is more to it than just blade area.

Look at the fast guys. They all use Quickblade Elite Racer.

It's easy to see the QB's on every race pic you look at.

Yeah as Deano said there's a bit more to it than area, blade shape and shaft flex are also part of the story.

I have all three sizes of Ke Nalu, have had the Wiki (small) and Maliko (mid-size) for a while and recently bought the big one (Molokai) with a softer shaft. You could say I am a "larger framed" paddler, my stroke rate wouldn't be called slow but I'm not an egg beater. In some (not very scientific) Garmin testing I'm faster in a range of conditions at a lower heart rate with the larger two than with the small one. Maybe marginally faster with the mid-size compared to the big but I tend to reach for the bigger one more often now because I like the feel.

Anyone on sunny coast got a medium and large Q.B elite racer I might be able to get a demo on? They look the goods.....

Anyone tried the fanatic Carbon pro...... How do they stack up? They look a bit similar to the Q.B

Fanatic carbon pro is a very light paddle, i use it with my 12' 6 fly race and reckon they are an awesome paddle, nice flex as well.

When testing demoing a paddle see what feels right for you!

If your an elite racer "The fast guys / gals) you may be able to use a much larger blade, longer stiffer shaft etc.

If your joe average it may be a different story.

I believe blade choice also varies with conditions and board choice.

Pick a paddle that works to your advantage no matter what brand it is!
