Can anyone provide some advice on how to apply in a "professional" way?

(or if you must use heli tape, try using a small squeegee...blokes at my local shop use one of those windscreen snow scrapers with the rubber edge)

I found if you stretch the tape or keep it under consistent tension when applying, this usually gives good results and limits the opportunity for bubbles to form. If your applying it by yourself back the nose or tail against a wall so you can pull to the wall applying liberal tension, after the first 15cm is stuck firm.
Next time I tape a rail I'm thinking I'll leave the tape in the sun for a few minutes then trial it on a down pipe... has anyone tried this?

Peel the backing off as you go and only stick a narrow centre line for the full length of the tape, using your finger / thumb to apply pressure as you go. This allows you to centre the tape where you want.
Next run your finger along either side of the centre line overlapping where already stuck to remove chance of bubbles. It may take 3 or 4 passes on each side of centre to reach the edge.
I have found this method far easier than trying to stick the full width as you go.

Don't do it....if you sticking stuff on your rail be aware one day you might want to remove it.....not called sticky tape with no good reason
