Just bought a new fanatic falcon 14' and this is my first carbon board and second downwind board, so one would say I'm still pretty new to downwinding as I spend most of my time in the surf.

I've always have had rail tape on my surf models and my old downwinder, so this is proabably a silly question but do you really need it on a carbon model ? And if so how hard is it to take off and replace it ?

Be good to get some feedback ?

Cheers.

Personally I say no.. don't use rail tape.. but it depends on how much you hit your rails.. and depends if you have tape on the blade of your paddle or not.

I would say yes. Carbon brittle fractures so impact from your paddle will crack it. I find quickblades (although awesome) because they are sharp they seem to do the most damage to boards. Everyone who paddles hard hits their rails

It depends how much your care about how your board looks. The rails of your Falcon will probably look pretty grim in a short time if you don't protect them. It probably won't be anything to worry about structurally, but the carbon one I paddled seemed to collect paddle scuffs at an incredible rate. Glossy finishes are probably more resistant. I don't use rail tape but I do put tape on my blades, and all my DW boards have glossy finishes.

I've got an original Naish 17 and it has not ONE mark on the rails after all these years: they are still shiny like new. But the 2014 carbon Falcon I borrowed looked like it was 10 years old.

I think in some cases the manufacturers have actually gone backwards in terms of construction, and are passing off shonky construction that wouldn't have passed muster a few years ago under the guise of "carbon" "lightweight" construction or some other blather. The original Naish "carbon" (actually it wasn't carbon as far as I can tell, but some aramid or other) were reasonably light and were very tough, and had a proper paint job. I think most buyers would prefer that construction now (in terms of the durability vs. weight trade-off) than what we are often being offered. Sometimes I almost wonder whether the manufacturers are deliberately trying to see how crap they can make the boards whilst still relieving us of our hard-earned cash.

You only need to look at the construction of a Jimmy Lewis M-14 to see how it could be done. There's no need there for two constructions (eg. HRS/AST vs. "carbon") because the standard construction is perfectly light enough and yet very durable.

I like rail tape (specifically Rail Saver Pro, although the new ION stuff looks very similar keen to try that on the next one)...I'm not much of a rail basher but where I paddle I often have to lean my board rail-down on asphalt or concrete, which I'm sure isn't good for rails longer-term

Just as a side point, I tried those textured rail tapes on a surf sup. Bad idea!!! I think it reduces drag. Surfed the 8'3 hokua with it and I couldn't get the rails to hold. Kept sliding Out in my bottom turns. Which had to be the tape as I had big fins in and this board as a pin tail is a rail master.

So maybe the textured stuff would be good to reduce drag on a raceboard? Although u do go allot slower then when u surf

I agree.. Bad idea because I saw a newbie with it recently and her paddle blade was wrecked from rubbing against rail tape that felt like corse sand paper.

Another thumb up for Railsaver pro.I got 2 new full carbon racers and although I don,t hit the rail that often the start of a race and buoy turns can be very hectic.compared to a board or even a repair its rather cheap and saves a lot of hassle.
Performance wise I didnt feel and measured any speed diff bwtween with or without tape.

Rail tape on the new Falcon is a good idea but certainly doesn't need to go down the whole rail. Have a look on your old board and see where you were hitting the rail. It may be a section only 30 cm long. Cut a piece of rail tape 30-40cm long and apply it on the upper edge of the rail and place it down lower on the rail the further you go back. Due to the rail shape on the Falcon when the tape is applied correctly the tape won't even touch the water line.

I agree.. we all have our own opinions.. and are only trying to help.

I've seen many good people leave here over the years because of this stupid red thumb thing.. It's very hard not to take it personally and feels like a slap in the face.. I wonder how long Facebook would have lasted if you had not only a Like tab but also an Unlike tab.

I've talked to people who think it's a big joke and have told me that they red thumb certain people for their every comment they make no matter what it is.. I'm sure this happens a lot.. because it can be done in secret and in a very cowardly way.

I'm used to it and become thick skinned to it.. So red thumb away..

I I use the Rail Saver Pro clear textured stuff on my hokua le 8, 3 and not a mark on the rail, I swear by the stuff or the Ion stuff as well, the only problem I have had is its so tuff and and a bit sharp, in summer you can scratch your arms on It when getting on your board or paddling on your stomach.

The protection isn't worth the decline in performance, imo.

haha, yeah red thumbers crack me up!!

its usually those brand pushers that don't like it when somebody notions that their product isn't the worlds greatest product suited for everybody in every condition.

I was hoping my comment would have people confirming the same thing I experienced. I know I sound like a kook blaming equipment but when chuck Patterson was over he was the one that actually brought it up.

ps. wasn't a plug for naish either, I ride my own customs
