Ok I admit it I am a dumbass x 3!

I stupidly put the surftech deck grip on Kristi's board. It is a flat surface grip with no ridges and it is barely 4mm thick. I questioned it when I bought it but was assured it would be fine. Well it isnt! in faster turns she slips straight of the deck.

When we put it on it lifted twice, I was told bad batch of 3m glue, so we re stuck the thing with contact cement thinking maybe a 2 year deal before it needs to be replaced.

I have just invested 3 hours trying to get the grip of Kristi's board and I am close to using my electric planner lol. I am currently getting off inch pieces at a time and am about 1/3 the way through.

I know there have been other posts about this but I cannot seem to find them.

Any assistance appreciated.

Phill

Someone mentiond a heat gun or hair dryer i think phill, Just to heat the glue and it comes off easy, Not to close mind.

I would try the hair dryer first as the heat gun has a verry hot heat

The hair dryer will be more safe

mate, try a heat blower or hair drier to soften up the glue- be careful- to help get the grip off. i think i have seen grease remover type stuff to get the rest off, on the breeze
good luck

Thanks Paul,

But i dont really want to use a heat gun incase i delam the board. The contact cement i used was a once in a life time job from memory as I dont often do things half way.

Me thinks there is a solvent or two that may dissolve it and hopefully the surftech deck grip too lol.

Phil,
Maybe try some of that goof off stuff? If you can get it underneath (inject?) the pad it may come up!

BTW-I feel your pain! I am just getting ready to put on my 4th deck pad on the Naish!

Prepsol worked really works well for getting the final bit of glue off!--Ronnie

I recomend the hair dryer phill over the heat gun.

I have done it onvce before and then used a product called wax off to clean the rest of the glue. But also used meths wich i found better and far cheaper.

What i done was lift the start of the pad and heat it from a distance while pulling slowly and it comes off. still a lot of work but does stop it breaking into little bits.

Hi Lacey,

does the acetone effect the glass as this is not an epoxy board?

i thought i was really clever one time and glued some fins into the plugs and then later had to get them out. poured and soaked and eventually got them out.fins{pc-7's} had a bit of a fog on them but came off. the board seemed all right. i can find out to be sure!

Hey Phil, if it's glued on with contact cement try to soften it with turps or tea tree oil(hope he doesn't mind) . If you can get a grip on the grip with some multigrips(sorry, I'm figuring at this stage my late night poetry might not be exactly what you're after) ,pull back the grip and start slicing the glue with a stanley knife AKA box cutter . If this fails drink the turps . Glad to be of service !!!

Phill,
The safest stuff to soften contact is desolvit or similar. Take care with solvents as they can damage paints used. Selleys say toluol or thinners will soften contact....but it may soften paint to, epoxy is normaly resistant to solvent attack.
A plastic scraper & heat is the go.

In the end it was good for holding washing pegs.

Phil, I'm guessing most people on this site have not experienced childbirth, but here's an idea . Get your missus to take the deck grip off and then get her to compare the two experiences . Glad to be of service ,again

Goof Off graffiti remover is the stuff but make sure you do it in a well ventilated area it is toxic as hell but won't hurt your board.

I've used it a couple times with great results.

buy a bottle of turps, dowse gripped area of board and an old sheet with lots of it, cover gripped area with wet sheet. wrap entire board with black plastic securely, leave in cool place for 6+ hours.

grip will fall off and glue will wipe off

In hardware stores there is a critris based cleaner that's good for taking wax and board grip off, wont hurt your board or the enviroment.
