As seems to be the case, I only do damage to gear on an average surf day. Today my QB Kanaha blade broke. It would be about 1.5 years old, so not expecting any warranty.

It has cracked about 1/4 of the way down the blade, straight across. A couple of years ago I broke a Kanaha shaft, so I have a perfectly good carbon blade sitting at home, and now I want to mate that with my perfectly good QB shaft from the paddle that broke today.

I am interested to hear from anyone that has successfully removed a shaft from a blade, with some insight into how they did it. I had a quick look at it this afternoon, and I don't think this is going to be easy.

I was in the same situation till today.
Took my paint striper gun today and heated the top of the blade
keep moving the gun up and down while you turn the shaft around on the area where the shaft is fitted.
went around the neck about 5 turns than just twisted and pulled off it came
Repeated the same process for the second one and off it came.
easier than I expected.
Give it a go.

Or a hair dryer works too if you don't have a heat gun.

Depending on what type of glue/resin/araldite used originally (normally not known unless you did it) will dictate what temp you need to heat it too, I have found a hair dryer works some times but other times it does not get it hot enough, this is when I turn to the heat gun.
BUT!!! be careful with this tool, if you get the section of the shaft just above the sleeve where it goes into the blade too hot and apply pressure by twisting, you could twist the shaft itself.
I suggest shielding the shaft by wrapping it with something to prevent excess heat blowing up the shaft, don't twist too hard if the shaft does get hot, and I would say if its too hot to hold your hand on it, then it is way way too hot, DONT twist.

Thanks guys, don't have a heat gun at home, tried the hairdryer yesterday and didn't seem to do anything.

Will give the hairdryer another shot, I was probably not patient enough on the previous attempt.

Hi Aus301,

We use a heat gun in the shop and have never failed to get paddles apart. The secret is even heat. Don't allow any hotspots, keep the shaft rotating and make sure it gets nice and warm. I suggest if you can touch it, it isn't hot enough. There is a fine line between too hot and not hot enough. Too hot and the resins that bind the carbon fibres together let go and you'll shatter the shaft, not hot enough and it won't let go at all.

Take your time and make sure you have a helper. Although a helper is not essential to get the job done, it makes it much easier.

aus301,

I just used the BBQ. Did the job in half the time of a hamburger paddy (admittedly just for an araldited handle).

Ok I use this technique on a KeNalu which is held together with heat glue so it still may not work on the QB, but to get extra heat out of a hair dryer you can block some of the air intake side so it doesn't get as much airflow but pumps out hotter air.
Does the job heaps quicker than just using the hairdryer unrestricted, block it to much though and it will overheat and shutdown.

I've got a heat gun if you need one. If you can get the handle out of the busted shaft I'll take it off your hands mate.

I might have to come see you D. Dunno where the half of the shaft with the handle went. Handles are usually easy to get out as they are often only stuck in with Araldite.

I may or may not have blown up the missus hair dryer today... threw it back in the bathroom, hopefully she will think she did it.

QB do two different repair packs, shaft and blade. We have only seen/bought in the shaft repair. Basically you cut the shaft off at the top of the collar of the blade, and then a new shaft and internal ferule are the epoxy'd into the top of the blade. Guessing that the same will apply for a blade repair. Cut at top of collar and then attach the new blade and ferule.
Best bet is to send an email to QB customer service and they can advise you cost and postage, we keep some shafts in stock but no blades unfortunately!!
Good luck with the repair.

I have broken a blade in the same spot. i got the blade repair kit from QB. piece of cake, cut your old one off at the top of the blade, glue the insert into new blade, then glue blade into old shaft. my paddle is good as new!!
