That's a bugger Jake... Did it brake like this? (see pic)

I'm sure you should be able to get another C4 shaft and fix it.

Hi Jake,

C4 shafts are available but unfortunately you have to buy the blade and handle as well as they come as a package and that is life. To snap a carbon shaft by hitting the rail whilst surfing is hard to believe whether it be a C4, Werner or whatever brand of shaft. Could you give everyone more information on how it happened?

If you want one in a hurry pop into Dale Chapmans factory as he is making some excellent shafts at the moment and I'm sure he would be more than willing to help you get back on the water and the same could be said for Woogie & Jodie with their paddles.

C4 Warranty info can be downloaded here

http://www.c4waterman.com/downloads/product-documentation/paddle-warranty/download.html

Cheers

yeah it was just a hit on his rail that done it i seen it happen i was about 2 feet away when he done it. It broke in about the same spot that my C4 broke, Sounds like quite a few shafts from C4 have broken so maybe they should bring a few replacement shafts in. Bye the way mine was replaced by warranty.

I would have just got another shaft but C4 shafts are oval and most are just circular.

While we're on the subject, has anybody done much damage to their paddle?

I got excited and removed all the tape from my paddle and went out in shoulder high surf. After the session I found the edge of the blade a little graunched. Easily fixed with some epoxy but the tape went straight back on.

Everybody worries about dinging the rail of their board but I have found the paddle to be more fragile than the board.

"Well i was surfing in about 1ft surf at the Alley and went up for a closeout turn and swung the paddle and it hit the rail and the shaft snapped and splinted so i was pretty devoed."

Jake I wish you all the best with your claim mate and I am sure if its valid C4 will look after you and I mean no harm but... I have to Laugh at the above because In all your posts I have never heard the words.... "i was surfing in about 1ft surf" and It makes me laugh how we all bend our tale to suit the bill.

Im sure it was only 1ft but I have to giggle at the way it sounds comming from such a talker.. no offence lol

Good luck Bud

Regards

Luke

I spoke to the guy who runs www.supglobal.com and the exact same thing happened to him, he contacted C4 and they sent him a replacement shaft, he was only saying good things about the guys at C4 and he rides for GONG.

Yer well i would say good things about them but its been 2 months now so im over it.

Ben..my husband is going to Hawaii in 2 days time. He will be catching up with Todd Bradley and picking me up a few things from C4 like a fin for my Vortice, extra breather plugs, a new 10' board bla bla bla.

I can ask him to bring you a new shaft if you like? He is home on 17th October, the day before "Choose Your Weapon" on the Goldy and a week before Seaway to Seaway ? I can give it to you at "Weapons" on 18th Oct ???

Jake

To get you out of trouble I can fix you up with a shaft. I am heading over to Hawaii next month so hopefully I should be able to get another one to replace it. The last lot I got from the distributor the blades had not been glued to the shaft.
Send me your details.

Carbon shafts are incredibly strong but they do have there achillis heal , you can put all types of pressure on the shaft and it will hold strong but it can't take side impact. This is where timber shafts have a great advantage they can take all types of punishment and not fail.

If C4 won't come to the party go see Lats at Max Kayaks (West Burleigh) he manufactures carbon ski paddles and he CAN repair your C4 shaft. call him on 0411502064.

Well you learn something everyday - I didn't know about the side impact on shafts - would this be just on oval shaped shafts

I would also beg to differ about the wooden shafts I would see these breaking more than the carbon shaft paddles - due to the fact that wood has a lesser flex pattern than carbon We also make the wooden shaft paddles and have 3 returns due to snapped shafts.

Jodie I'm saying don't buy carbon all my paddles are carbon , it is a much stronger and lighter product than timber but carbon is very brittle compared to timber. This is not my opinion but straight out fact thats why carbon is mixed with hybrids like kevlar so it can be used in high impact/stress areas in boats and aircraft.

My point is if you own a carbon paddle you can't belt it around like your old timber slugger , if you read Jakes post he said the shaft broke when it hit the rail not under load while paddling.

Sweet - like I said I am learning something. Know what you mean about the timber paddles.

Yer..that's ok. I was really disappointed at first but got over it pretty fast. Yes I get nothing out of my site. Only members. There is nothing for sale on it. I just want lots of members and it's a great place to see upcoming events and has links to all the major SUP businesses and sites. It's the perfect place to introduce yourself to others and make friends. I even tried to join The Zone using an alias name but I think Randy recognised my email address and my new membership was never accepted. Anyway enough about me..lets get back to Ben Dover's Shaft !!

Read this post with interest, don't know a whole lot about paddles but I've definetely experienced the problems of side impact on carbon shafts. This can happen on carbon fishing rods, particularly the earlier models, a sharp crack against the gunwales of a boat, the thing looks fine then right when you don't need it i.e. when fighting a large fish, bang, the thing just explodes! Some of woogies paddles feature a carbon/kevlar composite shaft, this could be the answer to Bennys' problems, carbon fibre is best used for torsional strength while kevlar is the ticket for impact resistance. Like I said, I don't know a whole lot about paddles but thought this may help.

This news is a bit of a worry. I was under the impression that carbon paddles were almost indestructable. Obviously not. Someone asked is it only the oval shape? I wonder have the Spankers a reputation for snapping?

I've never heard of a Spanker breaking and carbon fiber is not bomb proof like some may think.

You need to be very careful not to get a knock/chip/ding on the side of the shaft because when stressed it could go bang at that spot.

It's the same with carbon fiber windsurfing masts.

Use a cover to protect it from knocks... and from the sun.

Hey Jake... If C4 are going to warranty your paddle (and that's great if they do) you should get a whole new one.. Not just a new shaft.. IMO.

Thanks DJ. I agree with the writer of a previous entry. You are very helpful

"Don't be embarassed though..., there are 2 kinds of people in every sport - the ones that give and the ones that take (neither is wrong)...You have amassed a considerable amount of knowledge in this area and freely/unselfishly pass it on. Your opinion is honest and informed without being too subjective, so I am sure I am not alone in appreciating your efforts on this forum..thanks".

I think that is way T Bradley wanted the whole paddle returned - Check out Sue post.

Yip Stu you are right we do a Carbon Kevlar shaft - I guess we might be selling a bit more of these now - although the full black paddle do look the best if it is going to explode like a bomb in the surf if you hit a rail I would be changing.

A happy ending for the story about Ben Dover's Broken Shaft. C4 in Hawaii have replaced the whole paddle no questions asked.

Jake will meet his new paddle tomorrow and take possession !!

that is good news - and now others will buy c4 with confidence

its a shame the guys from supsurfaustralia.com dont follow their lead -

I asked them about my broken shaft - basically told me it would have been my fault - and I would have landed on the paddle and caused a weakness - I hadnt

I simply broke mine do a power stroke paddling on to a wave - and it snapped under my hand -- fibreglass shaft

I cant believe no one is carrying replacemnt shafts -
