Had a good paddle Saturday arvo at the Cooks River. Paddled 5 up and 5 back and came home with the tide - which was nice. Just wondered how much the tide makes a difference. Has anybody got time comparisons ?

I recall rowing many moons ago on the Georges River in a surf boat race which was about 11k and we were rowing against the tide. The winning time (not us) was 1hr 12min against the tide. The previous year, same boat and same crew won with a time 14 mins faster with the tide on their side.

Obviously, water displacement, etc of a surfboat is no comparison to Sup but just curious how much tide helps.

I would say "a fair bit"

Dunno about where you are but when the tide is going out in the Swan river it would flow at about 15kn, last time I went up river with an out going tide we burned through much more fuel than normal.

Im guessing on a SUP you would have ended up at Rotto

During last years Hawkesbury Classic I majorly under estimated the effects of the tide. Going against the tide pretty much slowed me down by just over two kms/hr and that was when hugging the banks compared to being in the middle of the river with an out going tide, which made a big difference over 111km.

Fair dinkum, look at the 2 peas in a pod.
The Cooks River can be paddled to about 6 k's.
Yes, it does get muddy at low tide. Fortunately, I started my paddle at 12:30 when the tide was just heading out. There is a railway bridge just below Canterbury Racecourse - this is known as the '5K bridge'. It is well known to ski paddlers and boat rowers although I don't think it is used much these days as it is the most polluted river in NSW. I did see a floating dead rat amongst other things.
Care to join me this Saturday arvo. It's a good paddle - just don't fall in.

Gutsy effort mate. Are you backing up this year ? Do you know how much the finish times of the skis vary with tides each year ?

Tides make a fairly big difference to your speed depending on which body of water your on. I've been nearly turned around in my old K1 by some of the eddies in the Georges River around the lugano area. Makes you look at the tide chart.

Wind and tide make a world of difference , when paddling against the tide always look for eddy's and back currents. Just be careful cutting too close to shore to dodge wind and current as shallow water is very very slow.

Try and use the edge of a eddy to get a sling shot. It's no different to paddling in the open ocean hunting for bumps and runs.

An eddy is where the current pushes past a change in the bottom structure or shoreline and makes the current reverse , it creates a circle on the surface that's how you see them. The easiest way to find one is on a corner of the river , white water guys use these to paddle back up stream in certain sections.

If you paddle on the edge of the circle on the shoreline side that's where you will get pulled forward , if you go to far in the middle of it , it will spin you around the wrong way.

Cheers for that. I'm backing I would end up in the middle and spinning 'like a record baby right round, baby right round'.

Yeah I'll be back this year, missed the record by 2:30 mins and I'm a bit stuborn like that. Last year we had two tides against and one with, but this year is the opposite. From memory the fastest ski time is around 7:30 hours and cam ne anything up to 17-19 hours for the end of the field.

Definately agree with Piros on the wind and tide will effect you. I just like to think that its always harder then it is to justify my slow paddling . Also gives me more reason to paddle harder as well.

On a more serious note, the last 2 times I have paddled the Wonny, I managed to not pick the tide, so it was hard one way and the wind the other. I find the wind has a bigger effect that the tide. Last Friday I paddled up river with the wind and against the tide and on the way back the opposite, I just found the wind caused about an extra min per km over 3km each way.

Wind was about 25 kms.....

But all in all you and me aint going to the Olympics for SUP so get out there and paddle

Tidal flow... depends on you location, and tide cycle... I remember paddling near the upstream Barwon Heads River Boat Ramp, old sheep wash area... It was gushing through there so strong, and I was just paddling on the spot, going at about 85% power.
