Tore my right rotator cuff last Xmas in a high speed windsurf catapult.
Tweaked it again at Sandy Pt putting on a wettie (how embarrassment). Since then have been getting into SUP and paddling most days and absolutely loving it. Still sailing but just wanted to know if anyone had the same problem and whether paddling helped or hindered.
After a decent paddle I find my shoulder gets a bit sore but in that "good" sore feeling. Does paddling help the ligaments/tendons to stretch and restore to give better flexibility etc??
Thanks in advance.

Just be careful of paddle length the longer your paddle the more stress gets put on the joint. Let pain be your guide if it hurts stop , don't stretch you sholder cold just warm up by paddling nice and easy.

I have had three surgeries now, And i find sup does help with build up the muscles

But the shoulders will tell you when to rest, Once you have had surgery its a life long episode to look after them, They will never be the same again.

But they will be in a lot better condition than someone who does not exercise them
I can sup for 3 hours and be fine no pain at all, Even the next day fine

Or i can go for a sup and 5 min latter I'm in pain and it hurts like hell.
Be careful because that pain you may think is a good after a good sup maybe well be your shoulder saying rest me, I often rub anti flame into mine after a paddle and this takes away any build up of pain, The pain really is just the tendons flicking on bone, Surgery can fix it but more times than not it will be a life long problem

I often feel sorry for my self, But there is a lot of people in the world that are is a worse shape
But to give my 2c worth is yes sup does help but take it easy, The age old answer to it is if your body is in pain, rest it its in pain for a reason

I also broke my ankle this yr in 4 places, Sup has been the best thing for it, still get a bit of pain if i twist it, But I'm happy with it
Shoulders i feel are the worst things to have pain in = to back pain

Had my rotator cuff repaired a few years back and thought my surfing days were numbered, but sup seems to be pretty good at building up all the muscles and its heaps more entertaining than that big rubber band the physio gave me

I damaged both my rotor cuffs, has caused me considerable discomfort short boarding and I thought it was sure to become a problem paddling. I felt some discomfort when I initially started paddling, now no problems at all.

Excellent comment!
I also say, "it's better than sitting on the couch!". And add a Flat Water Board to your collection, and you can paddle on water every single day.

Thanks all, food for thought. Just really happy to be learning a new sport, like a bloody kid on Chrissy morning!!
Will try the anti-inflam and see if that helps.
Doc said its either an op (which I dont want) or slowly strengthening it.
Ill perservere, ta

Indian clubs have helped my shoulders. The clubs move your joints around without much weight and identify tight spots.

I wish I had used the clubs as a newbie.

If possible, try to exercise muscles that oppose the paddling stroke.

A balanced shoulder is a happy shoulder.

As your balance improves, you will be able to engage more of your core. That's where the real power is, but it takes time to link it all together.

As you transfer power from your feet to your hands, you will encounter weak links in the chain. The shoulder is a very common weak link. Don't abuse it.

There are heaps of information on the web. Asking now is very wise of you.

I usually go to Dave Kalama's waterman's journal to remind myself how to paddle correctly.
