My girl and i went out in portland harbour today, strong offshore chop and a bit of swell. She was on a borrowed 26" wide 10ft windsurf board converted to a paddle board, i was on the 11 6 southpoint (which i really like) we got out there pretty easy with the strong offshore. We went right out to were the ships come in and had tug boats and the odd big boat running around, when we got right out near the ships a squall came through really strong winds and blinding rain with 3ft wind chop, really hard conditions for only our 3rd time out. We turned around to come in and thats when we reliased how hard it was paddling against the strong wind, my wife who is really good at it could not stay on the skinny small board and kept falling in and started cracking it big time ! In the end i had to give her the 11 6, whilst i layed down on hers and paddled in like i was on a surfboard at least a 1 k paddle When we got back in and she got dry and changed, i went for another paddle on the 11 6, im really liking this board and loved how stable it was in the choppy windy conditions today. Hope i havnt scared my girl off for ever

Lesson learned..Don't paddle too far out with an off shore wind..

These things don't like wind..even 5-10 knots can be difficult...Down wind is a different story..but even down winding can be tricky to start with.

I think you need to pick your days to start with..Once you get better you will know what to do..Sometimes it's best to kneel down and paddle into a headwind.

A couple of weeks ago I did a downwinder with a couple of friends and one of them was a girl that had only done it a few times..As we headed downwind we needed to head off on a slight angle to make the point or we would be heading towards Tasmania next stop..

She could not get the angle thing happening and was drifting too much in the wrong direction..The wind was getting stronger (25 knots) and I paddled over to her and knelled down and told her to do the same (even tho I was fine standing).

She was still finding it hard going with the homemade paddle that she had..and I was getting a bit worried..I had my Carbon Naish paddle and I swapped paddles with her hoping it would make it easier and give her more power..and it did.

Once back on coarse and certain to make the point I couldn't wait to swap paddles and get my paddle back..even tho she'd loved to keep using it..[}:)]

Anyway...We live and learn..and look back now and laugh about it...I hope your girl does the same..btw..Make sure next time it's glass..

Yeah definately a glassy day next day for the girl. She did actually have to kneel down on the southpoint board to get her out of the rough stuff, otherwise it was doing the side thing you mentioned. She also had a home made paddle, which i got stuck with once we swapped boards trying to lay on the thing and paddle at the same time i got it sorted though, but yeah will be waiting for nice conditions to take her out again. I do think the conditions today were a good learning curve for me though and feel keen to have another go in the surf.
