I was surfing over the weekend,When I was approached by a prominant longboarder a long time friend, who said a Sup was classed as a category1 watercraft and as such had to abide by the rules. I asked what rules "that they had to be 100 metres from all swimmers and other surfers". Pressed further he said a statement had been issued by Surfing Australia and Maritime Services to that effect ????? I tried ringing Maritime Services, but a long weekend and got no where. If correct what authority does Surfing Australia have over who and what can surf where.
Is this just more Sup bashing or just because Flatrock was crowded did the prone guys want more waves.
Cheers Ron

That's a new one on me Ron54. I reckon he may have been taking the proverbial out of you.
Funny though. Maybe next time you tell him to go and ............... Surf somewhere else.

Hi ET I know what your saying but this guy is in with Surfing Australia,ex Aussie champ, noosa champ, that's why I took him seriously.anyone else I would have politely told them to go away.I've heard it before never really taken any notice of it,just wondering where it's coming from.

Even though I live near Noosa I have just spent two weeks at New Brighton near Brunswick Heads. I SUPsurfed or paddled every day at Brunswick, new Brighton and Byron Bay. Not one person mentioned this issue to me and I had no antagonism from anyone. I do tend to stay away from crowds for others safety, but I think that if it was a steadfast rule someone may have mentioned it.
I have to wonder if the same rule would apply to surf skis, clubbie skis etc. sounds silly to me.
Cheers.

Seriously Ron Category 1 that's a boat are these guys surfing a boat ? They are all on a 8 foot boards much shorter than any Mal. Maybe it's time for the loggers without a leg rope and unbuttoned beaver flaps to move 100m away from all swimmers and other surfers if you are talking about safety

This all started in the USA and it has to do with the down winding side of things with the big boards offshore , not Sup surfing. The knockers have just latched onto it and it just sh!ts me to tears. Lennox headland and Ballina are epic surf spots , as much as I love them I steer clear on my Sup because we are just not welcome there. Unfortunately other Sup riders don't read that and this is where it comes from.

I don't know NSW law but going by our experience in Vicco, I'd suggest Maritime Services would be the only body with the authority to draft laws of this nature, and even then, I suspect they would need to be passed through parliament to become law. Before establishing such a law, the tendency is for draft regulations to be made available for all stakeholders to have their say over an extended public consultation time frame.

Surfing Australia has no authority to create maritime laws. If something of this nature was in the works, Surfing Australia would consult with AuSUP, the advisory body with representatives from each state. There has been no such consultation as far as I am aware.

I'd say your longboarder friend is yanking your chain.

Yep 100% true....

But only If your doing over 10 knots and powered. Also it's 60metres not 100 although the dicks on jetskis don't seem to know the rule.....
I don't think the maritime class a sup as powered... So I think your safe... But has made me laugh...

Did you paddle in?

Hi SP,nah I didn't paddle in,stayed on the edge as usual, the point Im making is if respected surfers start making BS comments and using Surfing Australia to back the comments, how long will it be before everyone thinks its law.I wasn't sure that's why I asked,

from NSW maritime site

A stand up paddleboard is not a vessel and so you are not required to wear a lifejacket.

The only thing that is in question here is the "prominent long boarder". He is either taking the piss out of you or is trying to impart his own rules onto you.
There are too many so-called "champs" who think they are way more important than they actually are. No matter what you ride you deserve a place in the surf.
Safety and politeness are the ingredients for an enjoyable time in the water.
Next time maybe you politely inform him that he is a wanker.
