Hi all

I am interested to get my 9 year old out on the water with me.

She is just under 40 kgs and 5' 0" tall.

I was thinking perhaps a soft surfboard around the 6' 10" to 7' 2" mark might work as a SUB for a person of her weight.

I would appreciate any advice or experience others might have.

Hi Downwind,
The length means little, the width is important to provide stability.
My 10 year old has been riding a 25" wide 9' long board shaped from a mal blank, its a bit tippy.
The new board below I have shaped him is 7' 10" x 27.5" & will be good for a few years as he gets heaver.

Jarrod on my 7' 10" x 30.5"...a bit to wide & floaty, certainly good for learning.

Thanks LSD - that is interesting and useful info

Damn - I was looking at a softboard 7' 4" by 22" and I was thinking that in proportion it was relatively wider than my *board 12' by 32" aircraft carrier (same relative proportion as the *board would be 7' 4" by 19.6").

Back to the drawing board - no cheap options unless i DIY, and I am not sure I am up to that.

I was googling around and found this seabreeze link:

www.seabreeze.com.au/Forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=41357

The video of "Ivan" surfing on a kid's windsurfer board is pretty impressive.

Some of the respondents to this thread have kids on mals and softboards... maybe kids handle tippy a bit better than older types?!!!

But i see the *board kids is 8' 5" by 28" so that just reinforces the idea that width is important.

Hi Down Winder,

Nesha (11) is about 4'8 and 34kg and she rides a 8'2 x 26.5 x 4 imperial

Kristiana (13) is 5'4 and about 40kg and she rides 8'9 x 26.5 x 4 1/2 imperial

GBoards make SUB and it too is quite good!

I tried many different surf boards but most top out at 23 - 24 inch and this as a rule does not work stability wise in the surf, 26min im my opinion.

Starboard make a kids board at 7.2 x 30 x 5 1/2 but they even float big kids lol!

The volume is important to get glide onto a wave and width is really important for stability!

lightweights can easily use a 9ft mal around 23-24"wide as long as it has a double concave.wide boards tend to be a problem as the little guys have to reach over to far, there are soft boards that are wide enough but most are 22"wide.get a 10ft( second) blank ,three stage rocker, keep it as wide as possible, skin it cut it to length and put in a non tippy bottom and get it glassed.glassed in fins and a protec finish whamo a cheap kids board

Hi Downwind,
We use G-boards and find them to be very good with kids and adults alike, you can't go wrong with them in my humble opinion.

My boys 9 and 6 ride a mal with about 1 foot broken off the nose. They found it a bit wobbly at first but now have no probs. Hey LSD where did you get the handle for the boards you made.
