Intersting story from the Outdoor Retailer Show in Utah in the US. They talk about why SUP is growing/booming!

http://www.supvic.com/?p=491

There's a bit of a summary at SUP Vic or a link to the full story at the Shop Eat Surf website.

Casso, any similar type stories from OZ distributors/retailers coming in the mag? Interview with AA, Naish, Starboards etc could be interesting. Probably similar feedback to the US i would imagine.

Pitty we can't see the face of the shortboarder. I'm thinking at that moment he's not sharing the same enthusiasm the retailers have for the sport.

It also shows that Blane isn't the only SUP brand founder that rips!

There's also a shot of the main man from Hobie SUP on the link to the full story. He looks like a yachty thats
into gridiron (NFL) that owns a tanning salon!

Serg, I am pretty sure that is Jeff Alter as the article mentions it is (looks like a similar mold to Chuck though-muscle on muscle).

There is a good article on Chuck Pattersone in the current Standup Journal for those that haven t seen it.

The shortboarder is Brendon Bradley, Todd Bradley's youngest son and yeah probably was giving uncle Brian some flak in a fun sort of way....

I am sure that SUP is here to stay and it will get bigger.

I am also sure that we will see heaps of SUPs rotting in the long grass beside the house or out on nature strips for hard rubbish collection.

SUPs have to get the weight down below 10kg and keep the price below $2000. Women, kids and other smaller people will get sick of needing help to get them onto the car and down to the water.

I've read LSD's comments and checked the weights of boards on the JP web site. The JP boards are about the same volume as a big SUP and some are similar dimensions and the heaviest is 10kg. SHQ had a special for $1599 including a rig so a sub-10kg SUP including paddle has to be doable.

Also, it's only a matter of time before someone gets blown out to sea in an offshore wind.

I agree with this. Took my very athletic female friend out for a lesson and while she could paddle and balance ok it was very difficult for her to move the board around on land. Hell its difficult for me and I'm 6' and 100kg. And dont get me started on the price thing. You're talking about a months wages just to get on the water.

The problem is that we have two competing forces at work here. Making a SUP lighter is going to require exotic materials and sophisticated construction techniques. This is just going to add $$$.

Did windsurfers ever get around this issue or did they just lump it and move to smaller boards?
