In one of the previous threads PT woody mentioned he has been toying with SUP Polo. I think its a fantastic idea so I thought I'd start a thread. I know some of played canoe polo I've not played but I assume rules and scoring would be similar?

Some thoughts:

1. The board. Should it be fast and narrow so you can get to the ball first or short and stable so you can pivot and change direction quickly? Should different positions have different boards?

2. The ball. How big?

3. The paddle. Design will possibly be affected by ball.Probably ordinary paddles to start off but maybe a flat angle or perhaps a little ridge on the nonpower side to hold the ball?

4. The field. What dimensions?

All thoughts on gear and rules welcome.

In canoe polo we used to play in a swimming pool - the boats were short and stubbie as you would ram an opposing player if they had the ball and try and knock them over. I think they ended up changing the rules a bit to negate some of the rough play

The ball from memory was like a water polo ball and the nets were suspended about the pool a couple of meters.

A lot of people wore face mask thingys on their helmets (helmets were mandatory).

The ball was passed and caught by the hands - not the paddle. You would want a small area blade with a lot of protection on it.

Probably want to wear PFDs as well maybe for rib protection - they were mandatory for canoe polo.

I'm thinking something like a C4 subvector. Short and stubby, with a dropped deck for stability and chunky rails to take getting rammed

helmet and pfd/impact vest for sure

Full body contact and grid iron style tackling allowed, obviously.

We found a tennis ball in the surf one day and pegged it at each other in between waves , very hard to bend down and pick it up without falling off , good skills training.

A water polo ball would work great.

Maybe we need the good people from ULI to sponsor this new and emerging nationwide league.

We use one of those inflatable exercise balls you can sit on. Just paddle up close and boot it. You need to be in a sheltered area or on the river.

Session and Allrounder did this with a beach ball at torquay I think.

The beach ball was way to light from what I was told and it was not full contact lol.

The uli idea is smart cant imagine too many wanting to ding up their fav board at 1600+ a pop.

When is the first game travel wont be an issue just delate the board and take as hand lugage lol.

Phill

PS our team name is the "Sharks"

Could you hold it in open water, using a playing field surrounded by shark nets. The nets would need to be filled with sharks of course[}:)]. The SUP's could be inflatable, and for a little extra excitement, either the paddle's or the ball could have a spike or two on them? No protective gear allowed, only board shorts and maybe a rash vest. Yeah, I think it's a winner, now all thats needed is players .

Yes of course the national championships at Mambo would be the net result of the initial Country vs Metro trials to pick each state side. Or possibly it goes to a premier league style affair, where Naish, Starboard, Uli, etc gather together their sponsored riders and overseas ringers for the ultimate pro series showdown. But maybe we're getting ahead of ourselves here. What are the rules? What ball do we use? What is the size of the field and the goal?

I like what this guy is thinking

For added difficulty you have to wear a weight belt while playing so if you come off its straight doooooown

I'd think a Water Polo ball would be a pretty good size (and designed to be in the water)

For the "mallets" maybe build something up around the of the Paddle handle (maybe make it out of a "hardish" rubber though, for when you hit boards/people). might need to get stronger paddle shafts though.

Here s a link (PDF) to the rules of canoe polo which would be pretty similar i reckon.

www.canoeicf.com/rules

Canoe Polo is an exciting team event played on 35m x 23m pitches set up in swimming pools or on flat stretches of water. Teams of 5 paddlers endeavour to score goals in a net suspended 2m above the water, the ball being thrown by hand, or 'flicked' with the paddle. Naturally, the team with the most goals at the end of the match wins the game. Find out more about Canoe Polo.
