Looking at going to hawaii in Jan (stop over back from the states) anyone know of some spots worth checking out?

Looking at either Maui / Oahu...

Anyone travelled on planes with Sup's? got a 9'6 - would it be worth taking or hire there?

Thanks!

I agree.. I'd not take a board.

I'd go to Oahu.. Check it out.. and then try and get across to Maui.. Both are great.

How long are you going to stay there for?

Recently had a look at the airline policy on length of surfboards they will carry, seems pretty universal that the limit is 277cm or 9'1". Made me change the board I ordered from boardbumps to 9' from 9'4. If you go over the stated limits you are at the mercy of the person checking you in.

If you were going to buy a board there they are usually not that much cheaper new, totally depends on the exchange rate though. But second hand stuff is usually very cheap and often perfect. I'd be looking around Oahu for prototypes of some of the new short PSH's that Blane has been hinting about!!

Yes Rodriguez, looked at overseas flights and also Qantas domestic locally from memory.

Virgin came out with all this publicity when British Airways stopped taking surfboards saying how cool and surfer friendly they were. Let me tell you they changed the original policy pretty fast and certainly weren't too surfer friendly when a big group of us went to WA from Melbourne last year!!

Ah, the Pene - long board, long story. It'll be on the truck next Monday, really it will...

Rodriguez, just check before you go what the policy is. We had windsurfing and kite gear. They were really strict on weight and we had to kick up a fuss because we had booked before the policy changed but they wanted to hit us for huge excess baggage costs anyway. Got a bit ugly but they gave in to an extent, one of the guys had to pay $250 excess for his kite gear though - both ways!!!
It was all pretty bad karma though.

Hey Johnathon know any websites for those second hand sups?????????

Hey Starlet I've been to Hawaii heaps and would break my trip up with a few waves at 'POPS' at waikiki ,your see this break way out to your RIGHT from the main area ,so away from Diamond Head.
Then off to Maui and hang out with Byron sounds the go .
I've also been to Kauai another great spot!

Actually overall Hawaii ,doesn't matter where you are its HEAVEN!

Rodriguez,
My 2 bobs worth, for what its worth , JETSTAR are pathetic when you talk taking boards on board. I think their limit is around 7 "
I have flown both the flying kangaroo and virgin with boards and i think the limit was 9' 3 "

It says it on the Virgin site so just print it out. If you meet the specified requirements they can't give you any grief. I'm so keen to go get some waves in some warm water. I'm thinking Vanuatu or maybe Byron or something. Maybe Angourie. We'll see.

Miko, thanks for your reply. I have travelled on virgin for about 6 years now, with board lengths around 9-8.There max size is 3 mtrs or 9-10. I was just freeked out with jonathans predicament thinking there may have been a change in there policy from last year. Thanks everybody for your posts.
