Had some fun chatting with Jimmy Terrell from Quickblade while I was in California
last month. One of the things I really wanted to ask him about was Stand Up
Paddling in the Olympics, here's a quick vid with his response...

.

.

Jim represented the USA at 4x different Olympic Games, so when you combine
that with his SUP knowledge I think he's pretty suited to speak on the topic.

But anyway what do you reckon about SUP in the Olympics? Will it ever
be in there? And SHOULD it ever be in there...?

Im amazed that kitesurfing and BMX is in it, tbh I dont think SUP should be in it just like surfing shouldnt be.

I don't see why not? Maybe an ocean racing type thing. But you'd think ocean ski's would have to get a look in too in that case, with alot of other sports throwing their hand up in similar fields.

if sup does get in the olympics it will most likely be a flat water straight line sorta thing as they already have the facilities for this at the olympics

That would be as exciting as paddling flat water

Wouldn't be any less exciting than existing olympic sports of kayak, canoe and rowing.
It makes a lot of sence to utilise facilities that are already provided at every olympics for these other paddling / rowing sports.
Maybe because SUP is slower, 500m would be more suitable sprint race length than longer races the other craft do.
Alernatively could do a marathon type open water thing at the olympic sailing venue.
Bring it on I reckon.
There's no denying the elite racing crew are athletes worthy of olympic glory.

definatley agree, that would be boring, hopefully if it ever got in the olympics they would do something like the stand up world series with a marathon/downwinder and or a bop style race

Really? I reckon it would be like watching people race Hyundai Excel's. Kayaks, canoes and rowers probably go close to double the speed a SUP can on flat water.

BOP would be good, however not suited to all countries. And probably has an element of luck that you don't see in many other Olympic sports, so might make less appropriate.

I think flat water racing would be the only option , would be more interesting than rowing , kayak purely because the athletes are standing up. i would cut , pingpong, badmitton , synchronized swimming , pistol shooting , clay targets is ok to watch, archery unless they introduce moving targets. Lots of scope to add stand upMaybee a slalom stand up down one of those white water courses.

In My Opinion it will never be in there , despite it fitting the Citius Altius Fortius rules which i like a lot (further , faster , higher)

I think you will find its already being talked about, OC1 will be dropped and SUP Sprints will take its place.
