Rekon I worked out something saturday morning. Surfed a local spot which is a reef break, only a couple of foot, maybe 3 on the sets but real quality. The takeoff spot is so predictable, you could have throw a fishing net over the whole pack. Surfed it for a couple of hours with a pack of surfers, some mals, some fishes and some short boards. All was well, not dramas, I was on my 8'3" so I need to sit about half way between the mals and the short boards as with my fat 92kg, even in glass she don't glide so its short board take offs which is cool. Had a fair share of good waves along with the others. One young kid was ripping, fins out, maybe the best I have seen. Then this guy rocked up on a 11 foot something SUP. Now I saw it, there is a pack of surfers, including me and this ocean liner heading our way. I dont know how many times this happen and the near misses were too close for me. I decided it was time to head as I had my fair share. Moral of this storey is it seems to be the bigger SUP boards that have the potential to cause the greef, with the 11 foot rails and the 20 meter killing zone. They are generally piloted by learners too, that makes it worse. Reminds me of the early kiting days. I had a longboard 11'6" to start with but I never surfed in a crowd. Wish people would take a second to think about it....

I reckon you have to pipe up and speech the newbies in these cases. As you say the maiming zone is 20+ feet and with a learner driver that is lethal.
Even on my 9'6 today at Strickos solid 3+ foot and 20 guys in the line up.I just paddled 500m to p*ssheads ....all to myself and a foot smaller.
Still got belted enough times to know I was at Rotto!

i,m on an 8 10 x 28.5.depending on conditiions my take zone be no much better than shortboard to a bit better than a mal. i think some of the shortboard crew can see that. a couple of do you want it calls goes a long way too.when i see the big boys come out its a worry.i
the thing with learner,s is the their not out for long
cheers

Charging through a crowded surf break with a log is ill-considered. Doing so without a leg rope is reckless endangerment.
SUPS also need to realise that blatant disrespect for the line-up will results in drop-ins.
Similar to kiting and windsurfing, SUPS and surfers should avoid straying into each others areas.
