Im going to Mackay for work for a few months, I know that occasionally they do get some small swell that's big enough to surf on. Would a SUP be a viable option?
Any info would be appreciated.
Hey pablito,
Yes Mackay gets Waves.
I have surfed it on a LB and a sub, only to head and a half high but i no it gets bigger, the wave boy i have seen at 8 mtres, i just could not get there for it, we are 3 hours to the north.
On average the waves are fat just suited for a Sub
I have seen over fifty guys in the water at times, mostly shortish boards(go figure) at ....... beach, spread over about halk a klick, so it was packed for up here.
There are probably 4 beaches i no off that get a bit of swell.
My opinion the best time is coming up, between april to august when the big highs develop over the east coast aand the winter cool gives most of us up here the early morning offshore , sometimes extending to 9 or 10 am depending on the highs strength and relative air temp Overnight.
Last year we had waves all winter.
Obviously when cyclones develop and get with in 300 -500 klicks out and the drop down the coast, it gets real good. As an example when Ului popped down the coast last year and touched up Prossy the SUP comp was in Noosa, and if you have seen footage , we were twice the size and clean for 3 days.
if you ride a LB as well i would recommend a stinger suit pant for the little critters that swim around here.
Hope this helps
Mick
