The Great Australia day duck race was held here in Melbourne today.

To raise money for Clean Up Australia and Life Saving Victoria they have a duck race down the Yarra river that flows through the city of Melbourne.

You can buy a duck for five bucks and be in the running to win a new car.

Here's a link.. www.cleanup.org.au/au/Donate/adopt-a-duck.html

To avoid the crowds and parking problems my daughter Claire in I paddled up the river to where the race was held.

We had a great day..Here's some pics..This is Claire..She's now 14 yrs old..and almost as tall as her Dad.

Claire has not been SUP'ing for long and although she was a bit shaky but didn't fall in.

This is my friend Nic (closest to the camera) and me cruising up the side of the duck race coarse.

Here I am thinking..Are you taking a pic of me?

Claire is trained well..Cold drinks..and a good pozzie to watch the race..See the yellow ducks in the distance about to start.

The crowd is cheering..The ducks are racing...It's all very exiting...(well sorta).

Our duck was number 2648..and Claire had called it Rosie (after her cat)..and she was yelling.. "Come on Rosie".

And the winner is...2888...Bugger...Oh well it was all good fun.

After the duck race we headed into the city for lunch.

Here is Claire with the city building behind her.

Thats about it..I hope you guys enjoy my pics.

Hey looks like you had fun.
I have a question... how do the ducks move from the start to finish?
Is it by the tide? or does a boat drive past causing a wake to push them along?

Hi David,
I like the idea of paddling around the Yarra like that!

I used to live in Melb and if I new about the joy of SUP then I would have been out on the yarra after work all the time for a flat water cruise and some excersise.

Are there many people SUPing down there on the river?

The back drop of the city scape looks great!

I reckon I will have to hire a board from RPS or SHQ when im down in March and paddle down through SouthBank.

That would feel so wierd after all my years of inching around in the car down in the city! Great way to see the city from such a diferent perspective.

Thats the great thing with SUP you have freedom paddle around and explore places in a more exciting way than in a Kayak.

See you down there for a paddle in March!

Cheers

Luke

Hey Luke...Yes it is a lot of fun SUP'ing on the Yarra...You just don't want to fall into the toxic water....Not to mention the cheer you would get..

I've done it a few times now..The only problem is getting hassled by so many people asking about what it is that you're doing.

Most think it's very cool.

I've sent you a email and hope to catch up with you for a paddle when you are here in March.
