OK, so spill the beans. What injuries have you done while SUP'ing? Aggravated that dodgy lower back? Pulled a shoulder ligament? Smashed your shin on the rail when falling off? Belted yourself in the head with your paddle? Nasty fin chop?

What are the most common SUP injuries out there?

lip cut through so my lip flapped around in the breeze, we still cant work out if it was a fin chop or a paddle chop but it was heaps deep and there were lots of stitches involved to put it back together. That was my first ever injury in 38 years of surfing so I guess I was due.

DAVEYG, About eight weeks ago I launched my 9'6" All Wave at First Pont Noosa and paddled around to Tea Tree Bay for a surf. There were about 10 guys out on a mix of craft with me as the only SUPper. The waves were quite regular around the two to three foot mark. There were no real hotshots out so the vibe was pretty good. I waited my turn and picked up a wave and rode it to the beach. As I pulled off and went to change back to paddling stance I lost my balance and planted my paddle in the water for balance. Big mistake this time, another wave came through and twisted me like a pretzel. As I straightened I felt a twinge and my lower back went into spasm. I could not paddle without major pain. I limped back to First Point, asked a guy to help me lift my board onto my car, as I couldn't move enough. I spent six weeks out of the water with Physio visits and stretches being the order of the day. All good now, but next time I will fall off rather than try and support myself that way. Oh and I will be very careful doing everything from now on. Cheers ET.

Same - torn hammy (did splits going over falls) & a shocker of a shore break - out for a week but managed a sup the following weekend - next day, Father's day (this year), forgot about the hammy, walked across road with 9yo son & kicked the footy to him!!! (ouch!)

10 stitches to cheek from board smacking into face (take note of tension on leggie before surfacing)

Black eye from landing on board with face.

Blood nose at Shark bay(!) from paddle smacking into snoz (don't have paddle in front of you when heading out through breakers)

Umbilical hernia from 28 out of 34 days paddling (but, apparently all blokes at 34% risk, so don't know if it was the paddling, but make sure you activate your core when paddling!)

All worth it .. had plenty of great days..

to date, nothing luckily (touching wood as I type this), have had sore core many times from laughing and carrying on in the surf with mates as the best is made from the lack of decent swell

Urethral tear from being dragged into the reef at Alkimos. Peeing was more painful than when I fractured my femur!

1) bloody nose from board hitting me in face when paddling over a wave;
2) broken tow from board lifting up when paddling over another wave;
3) pulled rotator cuff from being too old to stay out all day;
4) swollen knee joint from board spinning and hitting me in behind my knee;
5) cut foot/lacerated artery from stepping off the board onto an oyster shell;
6) whiplash from falling of a wave a speed;
7) disc bulge between L4 and L5 from race training (I no longer race); and finally
8) pulled smile muscles in my cheeks from all the fun I'm having in the water.

Dislocated my left shoulder when grabbing my board to avoid running over a short boarder that was trying to snake me. Happened exactly a year ago.
Didn't realize I'd done it until weeks later when I was seeing a shoulder specialist. He said it popped out & back in in one movement & tore my Labrum. Took about 6 months to heal properly.

Tendonitis in both shoulder joints due to paddle being too long. Bought shorter paddle & shoulders all good now

Yes, how exactly does one tear their urethera?

1. Take decent sized wave on outer reef break, preferably at lowish tide.
2. Make sure you fall off your board halfway and line up with reef.( this step is pretty easy for me)
3. Get your board to drag you at 100K/h underwater with legs spread.
4. Aim your genitals and perineal region at closest reef outcrop.

Easy.

Large wave broke in front of me when paddling out, I dived off over the front, but not quick enough to prevent my board bouncing up and the nose hitting me extremely hard just to the right of my family jewels. Result - massive bruising and swelling to the crotch/groin region, next two days unable to sit due to bruising/swelling migrating to tailbone and bumcrack zone. One completely snapped in half SUP. Good excuse for a new board though!

Bloody hell, nearly teared up reading that!

Worst for me so far is whacking the back of my arm just above the elbow on the rail. Heaps of bruising and swelling and couldn't do much with my arm for a couple of weeks. Thought I'd broken my arm when it first happened.
