After staying on the sidelines a bit, I seem to pick up that the cruisey aspect of surfing the SUP on this forum has been stampeded by the Stroke/Stroke/Stroke mentality of Ironpersons and World Champs with clinics and bettering your own importance.

can the moderators of this forum split it into cool vs obsession?

Baldrick,
Pretty easily answered I think.

When you log in to the forum, open the threads like "waves of abundance" and "my cruisy surf today".

When you see threads like "best stroke I have seen" or "fastest downwind board", don't open these ones.

Like I have no in SUP freestyle so I don't open threads like "my best flatwater trick".

SUP has many angles.
Regards,
Scotty

I was wondering when someone was going to comment on this LOL.

I agree with the rest, if you don't like it then don't read it. You might be surprised if you give the distance thingy ago.

I only ever used to sup in waves but in the last 2 wks i've so addicted to distance paddling i haven't even got in the waves.
Yesterday looked ok at alley out in waves but i chose to go for a big 10km distance paddle instead.

Put my mp3 player on and i was OFF! Racing with my tunes. I love both waves and distance, so don't knock it until you've given it ago at least.

Well i can see were baldrick is coming from, ( other than i think dj is a wealth of info & i rate him) but like angie says in the last 2 weeks there have been posts i havent even bothered opening. If you dont want to read it dont !! I am also pretty much only interested in surfing my sups, but will also have a paddle with my girl on the lakes I do know what you mean though baldrick , it has been a bit boring lately when all we hear about is the distance thing. just my 2 cents !!

I am still waiting for my board to be glassed so I have only been surfing my fish, not stand ups. Try and get some pics of your next sup in the waves brooko. It would be neat to see where it is you ride.

Yeah nice dog, Scotty.

I'll be posting a surfing vid later tonight (or maybe tomorrow) to try and swing the surf/distance ratio back a bit.

BTW - Woogie is actually an awesome SUP surfer too - he smoked me at the Snowy contest a few months back.

I'd love to see more surfing posts..I love Casso's vids.

I'm looking forward to posting some wave stuff this summer.. I'm not much good in the waves but I'll do my best.

I just posted some wave stuff about the Torquay demo day and didn't get any shots of the distance race..

There's a nice shot of JB on the nose of the 11'4"...Shame about the pink shirt..

Yep I totally agree Baldrick
Ive followed this forum since day dot and the past few weeks I have just lost interest.
I have a quick 30 second look every night and come to the same conclusion... BORING
Just dont click on the threads that DJ has started
But in saying that, overall, SUP by itself is the most coolest and addictive sport around at the moment imo. Who cares if your a flat water fairy or a wave pig. The thing that matters the most is that your on your SUP

I took up sup to ride waves but don't mind reading about good paddling technique. Might as well learn how to do it properly and prevent any repetitive strain injuries.

I think baldrick has hit a nerve here..... It's the competitiveness, the underlying self promotion and advertising that's poisoned this forum for me in recent weeks/months. The forum now seems to be full of experts and sales people. What I find really irritating is when they start competing with themselves on how many reads their posts get. How boring is that?

In saying that I don't think the forum should be split up - it's just different strokes for different folks.

personally i love all aspects of sup and enjoy reading about peoples experiences and looking at the photos/videos.it would be a shame if the sport fragments like surfing into "shortboarding is better than longboarding".Just respect other peoples right to do theyre thang. just my two cents as you say.

It appears a few people are having a problem with this forum! Maybe it should be divided into two as it is in Hawaii, though as it stands SUP is an acronym for Stand Up Paddle not nessesarily Stand Up Paddle Surfing. Many many people are not lucky enough to live at or even near the beach and if they can experience pleasure in paddling on a river, lake, creek or stream then good luck to them and that they should wish to do this on the best possble equipment and learn the correct technique to do so, who is anyone to critisise? Man (or woman) comes with a built in desire to improve things, if we didn't, then quite simply we would not be here or if we'd somehow managed to survive you might find yourself out there on a log, nude, using a stick for a paddle! If this sounds attractive to some I'm sure this would be sorted out after a few unpleasant nosedives due to your trees' lack of rocker sending you on a search for a tree with more curve! See, mans' desire for improvement steps in again! Yes the answer is fairly simple, as many have suggested, don't click on the threads in which you have no interest or if deciphering this is a problem, lobby administration to have the forum divided. Whatever your point of view nobody has has the right to critisise others..........Stuey

Exactly Casso, Woogie is quite simply an outstanding, versatile athlete, be it surfing, stand up paddle, outrigger paddling or distant sup racing! All you have to do is add water and stand back. He's a devoted family man and a top bloke too...........Just don't make him angry!

All any one has to do is POST a topic.
There are only a few of us that do on a regular basis.
Do you think that it is easy to come up with different topics all the time?

Hey Oliver ,
are you really saying that experts and sales people have no right to post or to reply in this forum?

I like to think of this SUP forum more as a Swaylocks forum, where there is respect for the individual and everyone has something good to give with like minded people getting together to rave about their passion.

Sure I like talking about my AUSTRALIAN DESIGNED and MADE boards and paddles and I have been told off, but this does not mean that I can't post or reply to other posts!

Forums are for sharing information by all people. Showing bitterness about a select few is what is destroying open forums and it saddens me that it could happen here.

With all respect Oliver you have had your say and now I have too.

Baldrick what is wrong with iron persons and world champs? Positive posts are so much more fun to reply to.

Regards Rod

Errrr no. I don't know where you get that from? Like others who've made comments on this topic I just find some of the posts over the past month or so a bit uninteresting.

I think the self promoters, sales people and experts have the same rights as anyone else to crap on about whatever they want and don't think the forum should be split up.

And by the way you give back - your posts about making paddles was very interesting - good on you.

I have to agree with some here that we all have a choice of what we read and sometimes it's not for everyone. For me personally i enjoy them all and as i've said before i live 3 to 4 hours away from any surf so flat water paddling is all i do and thats fine because i just enjoy being on the water. I love the surfing side SUP and enjoy all the post's especially the pic's and vid's. Most of you guy's are so lucky to be able to go up the road and surf one area or flat water paddle another.

Also the sale's side does not bother me either for the same reason as above that i have no one to ask but this forum or my SUP dealer which is three hours away in Adelaide.

Oh well enough rambling on from me let's keep this forum as active as possible about what ever anyone wants to post and if that means splitting it up that's fine by me i'll be reading both sections anyway.

Cheers

Might as well have my 2 cents worth I guess. I have only been supping for a couple of months and find some of the forum posts pretty informative and interesting (some).
As someone relatively new to the sport, and I am sure I am not the only semi-newby - I am really, really interested in posts by guys like DJ and Casso and Board bumps 'cos they are always talking about new boards and paddles and how all these different boards and paddles work in different conditions. Hey I know it's only my personal preference in what interests me but I bet there are ship loads of suppers out there in their first 12mths of supping that are keen to hear more about new boards that people have tried or purchased - it's not only interesting, it creates a bit of a network for people to make contact who are looking for new boards and don't always have the opportunity to borrow/demo boards before they hand over their hard earned $.
I personally work in the surf industry and have the opportunity to try a fair few boards and although I am very inexperianced in relation to sup I am more than happy to pass on my thoughts as a beginner/novice on any boards that I get to try if anyone is interested in the thoughts of someone so green.

Oh yeah just one more thing - I think its awesome that you guys/gals are talking about your different opinions and wants and needs from the forums and not just attacking each other like so many surfing forums tend to do. It shows that we as stand up paddlers are mature enough in our attitudes to surf/paddle what we want/ where we want and are prepared to give and take advice and criticism - sadly something that has long been lost in the general surfing community.

I am new to SUP also and the diverse topics are good, if they don't interest me I flick through them or skip them. I don't have anything to offer myself so I appreciate guys like DJ that regularly contribute and keep the forum alive. Too many forums have been ruined by non contributing elements turning on the regular posters for petty reasons or just for the game of it . dont let it happen here.

45 Mins to Caloundra or Main Beach, or a bit over an hour by boat to Cape Moreton!

Why do you ask Stupey? (my names not bald dick)
And like others have confirmed, turning a cool sport into a vvankfest deserves a seperate forum!

All i know is that a few people seem to talk them selves up a lot that do the distance paddle thing. Most of the Goldy crew think they are to call for school and your lucky to even get a hello out off them as they cruse on past . Ive tried it a few times when there's nothing much else to do not my cuppa tea (bit like watching grass grow)

Few of my mates are into it and love it
Hey ang its good you go paddling up the creek because it keeps you from snaking all my waves.

Cheers

Anyway different thrills for different people... but how anyone could think long distance suping was as fun and interesting as suping in good surf , has me wondering
