Hi Kickels, I'm not going to tell you which one you should join, but thought some extra details might help make your decision easier...

SUPSA is the Gold Coast based SUP club (affiliated with and insured through Surfing Queensland, the state branch of Surfing Australia), which offers a variety of events throughout the year to cater for all levels of paddlers, the majority of which are included in your membership (the exclusions being our major races, the '12 Towers Ocean Race' & the 'Creek to Creek Race'). Membership also includes limited personal insurance for whilst you are participating in any surf-related activity (including SUP) anywhere in Australia.

We offer regular (approximately monthly) club competition events including flatwater distance racing, ocean racing, BOP racing and SUP Surfing. the competition can be serious among some, but mostly its a lot of fun. Your membership includes a free BBQ at each of these club days and we encourage all members to come along and join in, even if its not your preferred discipline... (for example, in the past we've had race paddlers who have never surfed come along to the surf comps and learn to judge the surfing and hopefully one day in the future they'll be out there joining in).

We also ran a Summer Series evening time trial last summer catering for all levels of paddlers (with the aim being to improve on your own time over the series) and will hopefully have something similar again when the days get longer heading into next Summer.

SUPA (SUP Australia) is an alternative body (to Surfing Australia) which some clubs in other states are affiliated and insured through. It's not a club and so you don't get any of the other benefits of being a club member or inclusion at any club events. SUPA do also run some events across the country (primarily NSW), but at present, not a lot in Queensland. So other than the Naish N1SCO race in June, I'm unaware of any other SUPA affiliated events on the cards for QLD.

I know which one I would choose to join if i lived in QLD (And I joined it already)!!!

I also saw that the Naish N1SCO race series requires membership of SUPA or 'an affiliated club' and will need to look into whether this means I need to join SUPA as well as SUPSA (as would be the case for almost every other competitor on the Gold Coast), or whether membership of any SUP club (affiliated with either governing body) is acceptable. Maybe someone else on here can clarify this?

Apologies for any confusion here, I'll work on wording it better. As Ali mentions towards the end of her post, Membership to a SUP club under either governing body is fine (the club that is hosting the event, most clubs offer one day membership if you are traveling for just that event). Obviously this is to ensure insurance during the event. Naish Australia is not looking to produce their own stand alone club or association, we aim to build a one design division with in existing clubs (and new clubs to come) in the interest of growing the sport and club participation with a class of racing that is fun, exciting, affordable and great to watch for competitors and spectators. Ideally once we help get a number of clubs set up round the country with the N1SCO program there will be more N1SCO events country wide and a national leader board.

Kind regards,

JB

Hi Teatrea,

The N1SCO program is currently in development, but if your club is interested, please email me and I'll give you a run through in more detail as to how it will all work.
