Saw a guy out at Iso's late yesterday morning on a big Naish (11' ??) with no leg-rope on. It wasn't big, & it wasn't crowded, about a dozen mals & 3 paddle-boarders, but enough of a crowd to cause some grief if that big Naish was lost on the take-off.
There's a couple of very skillful suppers who often ride their boards without legropes around Cott way, but those guys almost never fall off, & if they do, they generally manage to grab their boards.
Not sure about the skill level of the guy I saw, but I think it's a good idea to always wear a legrope if you're going to be taking off on waves near half a dozen other surfers. I've heard some of the mal riders say that they're not very happy when there's someone out there who doesn't appear to have a high skill level trying to surf a massive great sup with no legrope.
Fair enough too

Dont we have enough laws already???? Pretty soon we will have to call the govt first thing in the morning to see if we can go outside!!!
If you cant control your board wear a leash. I dont wear a leash when i ride my long board and i have never hit anyone i also dont lose it very often and i also dont surf around many people.I wear a leash when I ride my little fish, still not sure why. Ive been Suping for 4 months never worn a leash yet, if i fall off i grab my board.I grew up Surfing way before the leash so i learned how to swim and how to stay close to my board.
Please Please let me have a little bit of freedom left,we just celebrated ANZAC DAY they died for our freedoms?? Less laws more Freedom PLease

Sounds like luck to me.

No matter what you skill it's only a matter of time till you can't hang on to / control your board and it damages someone in a BIG way.

Unless you surf alone that is...

not wearing a leggy around other crew is just spreading the "crap vibe" that "mal riders that dont wear them" have been creating for years

"F@ckin lookout!"

not a good look watching your oil tanker take out the pack after you blow that take off then get smashed into the shorey or up the rocks

worse is having to swim past everyone you nearly killed retrieving your board

I like your opinion Dogman and your spin on it.

It depends on where you surf and if oyhers are in the water. I think if others are in the water you should have one on for the time when you don't manage to grab the board.

I saw a quality lifesaver (ironman) carving up massive swell 2 weeks back off carties on his paddle board. The waves were splashing up onto the groin of the river mouth at Mooloolaba. He had caught some great waves with skill and was having a great time. Then on one massive wave he lost it and his board surf all the way to the groin finishing in three peices. I bet he wished their was a leggy option for his wrecked craft.

i almost always wear a leggie, learnt to surf before legropes, know how to save my board but, just too many floaters about today especially where i surf most of the time,i dont like leggies but i wont surf a crowd without one ,apart from that,i love too surf rocky bits and cant afford the ding repairssup dosnt need the aggravation.

if you read my post correctly, hopefully you would see, where i said I dont surf around many people. Guess you could say that could be relative to the venue. when i say crowded im talking about maybe 5 people I dont know. I dont like crowds never have never will, part of my Lakota Sioux culture i guess, whatever.
Because of this i have moved leaving very good friends and family to try and escape crowds. I chose a profession that would help me get away from crowds and hopefully find surf, professional yachtsman, you may say. And no I dont tell paul king or other surf travel companies where i find surf if I do. I dont sell out you may say, hey and you know what, I dont have the house, fancy car, superannuation, fancy yacht trips to the maldives etc. to prove it.
Because im not as lucky to be out at sea as often any more. I have to try and surf before the sun comes up or even in the dark or almost. If i get an hour I'm happy i go home let everyone else have a go, I call that sharing. I dont go out for 3-4 hours getting whatever wave i can, i could, thats greedy.
I have 2 beautiful daughters i taught to surf back when, now they dont because at their age it's not fun getting up at 0400-0430 to go for maybe a 1 hour surf. I miss that heaps.
So if im going to surf where i feel im a local ,and im talking over 20 years, and there is no one out and I dont feel like wearing a leash be it surfing my shortboard, longboard or SUP, I'm going to. If someone is scared of me hitting them, then wait an hour or 30, 15 mins till i come in. If your surfing where i am you would know me anyway and would know you dont have to worry. This reply covers a lot of issues dealing not just with Safety, sorry about that.
Im sure this is going to upset heaps of people, but guess you could say, maybe we can agree to dis-agree

multihull , your just wrong! and no amount of explanations will make your perspective correctplenty of guys surf there local break without putting everyone at risk. What happens when you surf a more crowded location like the majority of other surfers do.Will that be, well thats your problem man,you know its not the sign of a superior surfer not to wear a leggie, just wrong.
