Can anybody give me any advice on whether or not sups are welcomed or allowed at saladita?

Hey TamarackJanito,

I go down to Saladita pretty often and run a business that helps people find surf vacation rentals down there. Saladita is one of the mellowest surf spots I've ever had the pleasure of visiting. Corky Carroll, the world's 1st pro surfer, now resides there and does a great job of keeping the Aloha spirit alive. He's sat by and let many waves pass him by as he gives them to someone else (myself included).

I've ridden a SUP at Saladita and everyone was cool. I've seen a couple others do it over the years but it's certainly not the norm. Longboards still rule the waters there. Even though it's a point break there is some room to paddle away from the main point and pick off the less desirable waves on your SUP, that's what I did. Whatever you ride in Saladita remember it's a really special place and deserves a lot of respect. Be sure and give away a lot of waves while you're there and keep a smile on your face.

Thanks, That kind of puts my mind to rest, I was planing on taking my sup, and like a 7'0 big guy short board, wanted the choice to ride either one, didn't want the choice made for me by some local guy, based on people prior to me. I have heard such horror stories about that place, like the locals ganging up on guys and taking and burning their boards, following sup surfers to where they are staying and like giving them hell, etc etc.. I usually give 3 waves to every wave I surf, plus don't mind being to the side of where everyone else is, of course its always nice to get a few nice waves. I have one more question, how about the ranch? same goes? or is it a little more localized?

Yeah, sounds like you have the right attitude. I can't imagine that stuff happening at Saladita, maybe it has but it's not the Saladita I've ever experienced. As for The Ranch, it's usually empty. There are no real "locals" there as there are no homes or building there, just empty beach. Everyone drives in from Saladita or Troncones. But you will often find it with no one else around (at least when I've been in the area). The wave is more high performance than Saladita for sure so you may be wanting your 7'0" for this spot.

I bet with an adventurous spirit, some Google Earth time and a morning on your SUP you could even find some spots in between the Ranch and Saladita with NO ONE in sight! I know Corky knows a few, not sure if he'll share the secret though :)

well, i was looking for a place to ride my SUP in MX last winter -- a three month get-away -- and a friend of mine who knows corky put me in touch with corky and corky told me point blank not to show up with my SUP and expect to get any waves; sure, you'll get some once the wind starts blowing on shore but forget it when conditions are good. i sputtered, but but but. he said, we just don't want SUPs in the lineup.
so i skipped saladita and went to punta de mita instead, which turned out to be SUP heaven and would have been perfect if it wasn't such a crap winter for waves.
this year, i'm thinking about puerto rico.

Thanks for all the info, from what I can gather is that if i use common sense and not try to hog all the waves then everything will be fine, I planned on taking a few different boards just in case the sup thing didn't go well. A few of my friends just got back from there 2 days ago and told me they can't see why it would even be a problem, considering there was only 6-8 guys out the whole time, also told me that there is waves all over and it would be just as easy to find my own wave, sounds fine to me. I paddle surf a wave that has a lot of guys that hate sup and they never say anything to me, so it should be about the same.
