I understand your own concerns however will this not inject billions of dollars into the GC and lets face it Southport if fked and needs something like this.How many jobs will be gained thousands.Bring it on,just dredge the seaway and inner section for the ships to birth.

The GC is still suffering from the GFC,its the first to be hit and the last to recover.

Personally Im all for the cruise terminal and always have been. It will inject much needed millions into the gold coast community and create a whole host of different jobs, both during constructin and in its cruise operations. IMO the terminal is well overdue and should be supported.

Red thumb me all you like - its only my opinion and I love cruising and the goldy is a perfect cruise destination.

Forget Kirra. In terms of quality surf on a consistent basis, Sth Straddie is the best wave in QLD by miles. Just because it doesn't have the history and glamour of the South end point breaks doesn't mean it's not worth protecting. Not going to see too much support for a Straddie style wave on a SUP forum however. Apart from Jacko and one or two others I've never even seen a SUP over there. Do SUP riders have an aversion to getting barreled? Anyway, bring on the stupid terminal but it'd be madness to destroy the best wave on the Gold Coast.

These ideas are ironic to say the least.

Why ironic? You have a local government looking to bring in income to the city but not encouraging local business to exist.

Rather than creating stable jobs and business investment to service the growing permanent population they look instead to tourism and gambling as quick fixes.

Wouldn't a better idea be to spend the money on business incubation to encourage people to start real businesses and hire people with long term opportunity?

They have a enonomic development department who themselves believe that council fees actively discourage the inception of business via zonings, approvals, fees, advertising, extended waits for assessment etc etc.

I'm with Lacey, why ruin a beautiful place, threaten our most valuable resources for no substantial local benefit. Rather, invest the money into local business existing and new so that they can keep staff, hire new etc etc.

i agree cmc...but the broadwater still needs to be dredged. then again i can save 6 bucks if they dont and ride my pushy to straddie

hi, think it's more of a courtesy thing to the short board guys, the same with d/bar.

d/bar is more or less accepted as a no go for sup

Hi All,
There's a little confusion here about the ship terminal guys so here's some stuff to consider:
1. No one disputes the Broadwater needs dredging for recreational boating safety reasons. No one. The State govt has allocated $30M to do it. We do not need a ship terminal to get this done.
2. The amount of dredging required to get cruise ships which are now 268m plus (many 300m) long - dredged to 12 - 15 metres, is massive. Mr Tate's preferred option seems to be to locate the terminal near SeaWorld on The Spit- his own docs say that means 5.1M m3 of dredging. HUGELY expensive.
3. The dredging required to get these HUGE ships in at the Seaway entrance is 500,000 m3 - this is estimated to cost $12 - 15M every year- alone. This dredging will destroy the famous surf break TOS, which has been valued by Griffith at $20M pa to our economy. This will be lost. And that's before they start paying to strengthen the Seaway walls against the thrusters required to manouvre these boats... if they can get in at all.
4. Even if they - soz WE - pay for ALL this dredging & wall fixing, the turbidity and bad effects upon our marine life - which is substantial in The Seaway (370 species) - will seriously affect both water quality, the ecosystem and marine life. WHY would we do this when the Broadwater is one of our 3 greatest tourism and community assets?
5. Aside from all this ship terminals DO NOT MAKE MONEY! Overseas experts confirm this. Av passenger spend is $64 in most recent WA survey - even using Midwood Report estimate of $70 pp, it is chicken feed compared to the crazy costs of dredging, loss of local industries - diving & surfing, loss of marine life, damage to the ecosystem, etc etc.
6. And finally... what if there is an accident like the Costa Concordia? It would be an environmental disaster in the Broadwater.

The official council response received today.............

While Council respects your views on this matter, it is our intent to pursue the proposal to develop this facility on the Gold Coast. To date, Council has considered a number of locations and is currently looking at three sites; inside the Broadwater to the north of Seaworld, Wave Break Island and a southern option. Naturally the social, environmental and economical outcomes of any such proposal will need to be considered as part of this process.

In the short term we are proceeding with a Navigational Simulation Assessment to ensure appropriately sized vessels can navigate the Broadwater as well as an Economic Analysis to ensure the facility provides an adequate return on investment for the city.
