It's almost that time of year again so start thinking about who your partner will be. The 42km Seaway to Seaway Relay Race is coming soon. I had the organiser call me yesterday asking if I'd post some initial info up here and on ning as there is no official website with info yet. So this is what he advised me so far ...

Date - Saturday 14th November 2009

Time -

Briefing 9am
Womens SUP Start 9.30am
Mens SUP Start 10.00am
All OC1 Start 10.30am

Hosted by - Outrigger Canoe Club of Australia

Requirements - This is a relay race so 2 paddlers will be sharing one board and have an escort boat following them with the relief paddler on board.

Course - This year the race will start off Snapper Beach as they do not have permission to go out through the Tweed Bar. So paddlers will paddle out off Snapper Beach and start off the beach. Head north and finish at Centenary Drive at Hollywell (UBD REF Map 19 / C1).

If the race starts from here due to Northerly winds then the tide will be outgoing through the Seaway. If the race finishes here due to Southerly winds then the tide will be incoming at the Seaway .

If the conditions call for a North to South race then the SUP will start at Centenary Drive at Hollywell, head out through the Seaway, head south and finish off the beach at Snapper Rocks.

Cost - Approx $25 per person so $50 per team

Registrations - On the day either at the Jack Evans Park (same as where it was last year) if it's a South to North Race OR at Centenary Drive at Hollywell if it's a North to South Race.

After the Race - There will be a BBQ and drinks afterwards and plenty of free giveaways thanks to sponsor including Honolua.

This race is for OC1, OC2 and SUP relays.

Yes Teatrea ... each team needs their own support boat to carry the relief paddler plus drink, food etc. It can be an I.R.B., a jetski, a tinny.

If you know you are the same pace/speed as another team you could share the escort boat between the teams. Save on costs and hassle.

I had organiser John Stewart ring me this morning asking if I'd post some more updated info on the race.

It looks like John may have secured last years sponsor again Honolua which means there may be lots of giveaways like last year at the post race BBQ & Beers. Great work John !!

The race will now finish at last years site...Centenary Drive at Hollywell (UBD REF Map 19 / C1). If the race finishes here due to Southerly winds then the tide will be incoming at the Seaway. Or if the race starts from here due to Northerly winds then the tide will be outgoing through the Seaway.

Briefing 9am

Womens SUP Start 9.30am
Mens SUP Start 10.00am
All OC1 Start 10.30am

Cost $25.00 per head.

Just read this on the Outrigger Web Site. I presume the same applies to SUP but I'll check with the organiser.

This race can be completed as a short course (4 paddlers per one man outrigger) or long course (2 paddlers per one man outrigger)

So looks like you may be able to paddle with 4 paddlers sharing a board which could be more fun especially for more novice paddlers who may want to complete this race with not much prior experience or training. Would mean about 10-11km overall for each paddler. You could do 10 - 15 mins stints each and then change over. Sounds like a great option to me !!

Just a quick question if it blows from the North as long range forecast says do we start from the spit as i guess we will, the only prob i see is its a very hard paddle to snapper with the way the coast is shaped and for anyone doing it with out a rudder would be near imposible. What about using the support boat to get us out wide and the seaway and then have a straight run back? Of course this is only if the wind is from the North.

Come on angie, you know you want to paddle with no wind to help you out - thats what all the hard training is for.

Just spoke to the Organiser. A final decision will be made tonight at 6pm as to which direction the race will run. The conditions don't look great. The wind direction has changed completely from yesterday to today even. So I will post on here tonight as soon as I know what's happening.

John asked that all competitors bring to the registration their escort boat details (rego, type etc) and a contact mobile number for the driver.

He mentioned that if the race does go from North to South, they will keep the Burleigh Heads bouy out as far as possible so as to not lose the race line too much.

Yes just heard there were only 3 teams entered in the end. The wind was only slight but was a cross wind. Jamie said it was ok because they had steering to counter for the wind but that there were no runs to be had. Just a paddle...

1st - Jamie Mitchell & James "Billy" Watson
2nd - Shakira Westdorp & Mick Di Betta
3rd - Nathan Myer & Troy Pessy ? (going off Secartermuss's post here)

Great work to those 6 paddlers !!

Just to clarify.......

Troy Pease teamed up with Nathan Myer on a DC 17 and I 'm sure the boys are glad it is all over as there were no runners or assistance.Long haul 30kms, but a nice day to be driving a support boat!.

Peasy was last seen heading to McHappy Day for a refuel

Originally the girls were surposed to start 15 mins before the guys. I guess this rule still applied even though Shakira's partner was a bloke !!!
