Hey guys just noticed this forum. Normally on this site looking at the kite forums. Anyway thought i would take this chance to ask a few questions. Been having a go on a few SUP boards here and there. I love it and think i will get one. Fiance loves it too. So i need two boards. As you would understand a pretty expensive proposition.

Anyway since i am buying two boards i was looking for cheaper alternatives. Do many sell second hand? Does anyone have one they want to sell in Victoria? Obviously freight from other states would be too expensive.

Should i get one thats good for the surf (smaller) and one bigger and more stable for flat water. Would ride bay as well as coast. I know its evil but this would probably be the best bet right? Presumably as you ride more stability becomes less and less of an issue. Also am quiet heavy 98kg (Finance is half that) so does that mean i need a really thick board? I am presuming its about thickness but could be wrong.

Sorry for all the qtns. Any comments would be appreciated?

Cheers

Hi and welcome..

You know the saying..'Missed by that much'....I sold my old sup board cheap only yesterday to a friend who bought it for his partner to use.

I also live in Vic..Where are you?

You are right about your weight having something to do with which board is right for you...You need to demo a few boards.

You also should look at getting a smaller board for your fiancé if she is half your weight..Plus you could use it for those glassy days..

I now have a Naish 11'6" and a Naish 10'6"..You are welcome to try both and see what you think.

Stand up paddling is a great sport for a partner to participate in..Much better than windsurfing and kitesurfing imo...Your both gunna love it I'm sure.

Yesterday two fiends Nic and Oliver (both met here on this forum) and Nic's partner and her friend and I had a great paddle together down at St Kilda beach.

It was great for me to do it with others for a change..We had a ball..(and I didn't feel like some kind of freak doing it all alone)..We attracted a lot of attention being a group of sup'ers because St Kilda pier is such a busy place.

The north wind came up after lunch..Oliver battled the headwind to get back to his car at Middle Park..and the rest of us did a downwinder down to Elwood beach.

I'm not sure if SHQ have any demo boards or second hand boards for sale call them and ask for Paul..I think RPS has some demo boards that they are keen to sell..You could also try Mordy..they might have something.

I'll send you a PM.

I'm a newbie to this but I would agree with DJ weight plays a major factor. I have a Naish 11'6"" and I don't think you would have any problems with using it. I've briefly tried his Naish 10'6" and it requires more concentration to stay balanced, I also tried his NSP (the one I'm assuming he sold) - it's about as long as my board but narrower and thinner - it was too tippy for me but it would be just fine for someone the size of your fiance. I also tried Nicks C4 11" 6' which is similar dimensions in terms of thickness and wideness to mine - very stable and manouverable.

Personally, I don't want to spend too much concentration battling to stand on the board in order to get to where I'm going - so I am really happy with my Naish. Look at the bigger - wider/thicker boards for yourself.

Everyone is always looking for the cheaper alternatives, the problem is at the moment there are very few/if any second hand ones on the market. I think for two boards you are looking to be spending somewhere between $2,600 - $4K - ouch - and then there's deck pads, roof racks, covers, mods etc. In Melbourne have a look at RPS, SHQ and Trigger Bros - could be others also.

Hi,

My boyfriend and I have 2 boards between us also - we paid $1000 for a 10" oxbow for me which we thought was cheap and $950 for a southpoint bonga perkins with carbon paddle (used once) which we also thought was bargain which we got from the buy/sell on here and made an offer. I got my oxbow from WindSurf N Snow in Sydney. They can offer a good deal. So you basically need to look around and pounce on the bargains when you find them! i stole his carbon paddle and found it was much easier/quicker to learn than using our other crappy plastic home made special.

His board is narrower than mine which is good for him in the surf at 27 inches even though he'd prefer 28 - but he is also 5 foot 5 and 70kgs so depends on your weight. im still learning to paddle in the surf and the width 29' is perfect for me - very stable. I have got the flat water paddling very easy and have no issues. Just need to get some more confidence and balance when trying to surf a wave. Its great for us to do together when its not windy enough for a windsurf/kite for him.

So there is a girls opinion!!
