I'm looking at getting a couple of boards for the missus and I and would appreciate some advice.

We just want boards that are a bit of an all rounder, cruising around on at the beach, would take them on holidays to explore creeks and rivers etc, but also would like to be able to take them on small waves when a bit more experienced.

I'm just not sure on what sizes and styles we should be looking at.

Our weights are around 90kg and 68kg, so I'm assuming we'd need different size boards.

I would be grateful for any advice.

Cheers.

Fanatic and JP have great boards to start with. All-wave and Fly. Speak to a local shop. Have a demo, and see what works best for you and feels right. Look out for the bugs in them though! Once they bite you just can't let go an done board becomes three!

There's heaps of brands out there now to choose from but as far as Naish go I'd be recommending a pair or the 10'10" Nalu's.. btw they do a men's and lady's version of the same board..

You guys are about the same weights as my wife and I, and have similar paddling requirements.

We are both novices and wanted something that would be a little challenging (but not too much), after all you don't want a board that is so big that you can instantly ride it without some instability and the benefit of strengthening those core muscles while trying to keep your balance.

We did the rounds of all the local (and not so local) stores as well as attending some free demo days and endless internet research. Eventually the decision came down to a toss-up between Naish (Nalu and Mana) and the JP Australia boards. We settled on the JP Fusion 10'2" Wood Sandwich for me and the JP Wide Body 9'9" Wood Sandwich for the better half.

These boards are perfect and we could not be happier.

Agree 100% with folly, allwave is a great board, im 110kg and have been on a 9.6 for all but 2 years, love the board, some flat water but mostly in surf, yes i can ride smaller, I paddled a allwave 8.6 on flat this arvo.

The twist is my partner (about half my kg) picked up her new ECS 8.10 at 137L wide boy today, she is stocked and like the balance over the allwave 8.6, I could easily paddle it on flat but i dont think i could in washy surf. (I can paddle 9.3 pro wave on flat with ease but struggled in surf)

If price is a factor check out the ECS range, board, bag, paddle, leggy, fins, stickers, all included.
Not sure where my tee shirt is????

PS, I am only a customer, have nothing to gain from this........only a 2XL tee shirt ??????

Cheers for the advice guys, always helpful to hear from people in (or have been in) similar situations starting out.

Gotta say I found it easier to pick a suitable kiting kit when I first started that, than I am finding by looking at the range of sup boards out there.

I guess it's one of those things though, with the learning curve etc, almost any board suitable for a beginner is going to be suitable until you learn how you'd like to ride and can move on to another board with practical knowledge under your belt, right?

It's fairly big bucks to spend on a board, so it's a bit nerve wracking making the right choice.

Demoing definitely sounds the way to go.

All the above mentioned boards are good but if you are just starting out it's hard to beat the stability of a 10' Fanatic Fly all round.Started on one myself and rode it in big surf and small.
