On a serious note, I went for a paddle today at the Alley. There were atleast 5 beginers (total beginers) out on hire boards, in the surf zone (right amongst it) WITHOUT leg ropes. As I paddled past one girl that had just swum to collect her board, I heard here say "I cant believe they hired us these boards without legropes"...

I kinda thought, I cant believe your out here.....But thats not the point. Who the bloody hell is hiring out SUPs for complete novices to take into the surf and ontop of that not supplying Leggies?

I have a feeling I know who it is, and Im pretty sure its NOT Roar or JM surf school. The boards they were riding were SUP ATX and BG..............

There seemed to be the 5 out in the surf and a few more in the flat water. Eventually some more from the flat water ventured out on their knees. This thread is not a go at the rentee's but the renter. People want to have a go and get in the water and dont know any better. But the Renter should. This sort of thing will end in injury, maybe surf rage and at least very bad press for SUP which struggles already in the normal surf world. And if SUP was to be banned the renter would not give 2 ****s, and just move onto the next thing....

More and more of this nonsense will lead legal regulations that all persons on SUPs will require to don a PFD. Do we want that?

I thought it was illegal to have a cone in Queensland, soggy or not, but bugger me if they are not supplying leggies to newbies, then they should be getting 6 months in slot.!!!

Warren Young, head life guard, along with local council have made this decision. To some degree, considering how busy our beaches are, it makes sense. But, now seeing the regular happenings, there needs to be a lot more thought put into SUP and how it is handled, from rentals, lessons to sales and use.

I did see a guy out today wearing a legrope @ snapper.

I had to make a comment on how nice his board was,one black and white PSH hull ripper, the nicest looking surf sup's I've ever seen.

I'm not in favour of sups being in the surf without a leggy - but it will not lead to sups having to have pfd's - let's not get over excited about it now.

I understand everyone pointing the finger at the hire guy, but at the end of the day you would think common sense would prevail and if you were a total kook you shouldnt be out near the waves without a leg rope on.

I like how the chick says "I cant believe he didnt give us leg ropes" after falling off yet she still stays out in the zone kookin about knowing its risky to others

Without knowing (or really caring) who hired these people the sups - perhaps the hirer told the customer that they were not permitted to take the sups into the surf, and as such did not give them a legrope because it wouldn't be needed in flatwater where they were supposed to be. (fully agree with you chopz)

If the hirers knew what they were doing was dangerous (sounds like they did) then they were 100% responsible for their situation and not whomever hired them the sups IMO.

It should be simple, no hire in the surf at all and only one on one for lessons in the surf to me this is the only safe way to go about SUP's and the surf. That's MO anyway.

Husq,

Having been staying at Cooly a lot lately and driving up and down the Goldy seeing the volume of people in the water compared to what we see down south is a real eye opener I would say is 10 fold on all surf craft.

Even so I cant see why 1 on 1 SUP lessons could not be held and I would pose the question if you dont provide training for people in the surf doesnt that cause you even greater problems?

Yes Phil, and a lot of us agree with that idea. After having to duck under an out of control sup board while I was hooking down the line on my 12.6 today, I'm afraid its going to get worse before it gets better.....

hi phil, if your in coolie when a decent swell hits, go around to the greenmount lookout. it's a great view and you will must likely see 200 to 400 hundred surfers battling it out.

you take any wave you can get and hope its grows into something thats worth the effort being out there. there's no taking turns or choosing the good ones
