Just thought I'd tell a shark story, as I have 2 hours of nothing to do.

Just got home from a sup on sun morn where the guys I was surfing with saw a couple of reef sharks. Nothing to worry about but they were still there. After the surf my two oldest boys 8 and 6 and myself headed down the beach for a surf in a pretty calm gutter. After a while of catching some beachies my 6 year old tells me that he can see a surfboard fin and can I get it for him. I ask him where abouts and he points about 5 m away to shark. It was not very big but I had both boys on my shoulders in no time running back to the shore through the gutter. I've seen plenty of sharks up close and personal in the surf, but have never had the heart racing as much as this time. I don't know if it was due to the risk of my boys or what would happen if the wife found out.

Lets hear your brush with the men in grey.

Clarky,First risk getting the boy's out of harms way and secondly make a pack with the boy's not to tell mum!

Years ago i was surfing at broadbeach on the goldie, one of those early morning dark skys and the water had a milky look about it. Anyway there would have been hundreds of guys out as far north and south all you could see were surfers in the lineup.I was talking to this guy in the lineup who said dont move there is a shark behind you! So i turn my head to have a look at whats coming my way and it swims past me and heads north past the entire lineup,No one seamed to be worried,so we all stayed out. About 10 minutes later i was paddling back out after catching a wave and i noticed a turtle,That was it for me too much marine life out there so i paddled in ,thinking what would i see next?

Not many shark stories in SA.
Well not many survive to tell them anyway....

True story,

An apprentice here at my work survived. He was surfing on the west coast here in SA when him and a mate got attacked. He says he was more worried about drowning at first and it keep dragging him under. He tryied to punch in in the face but ended up with his hand caught in its mouth. Then every bight the shark took would end up with more of his arm down its throat. He actually ended up with both arms in its mouth, its nose in his face and a complete loss of movement in his hands and fingers as all his tendons were cut on his arms. His surfing buddy swam over and eventually the scared it off. They ended up with both of them sitting on top of the surfboards together with the leg ropes tangled up. The shark attacked on numerous occasions but when it finally went, his mate dragged him ashore and a helicopter came and flew him to hostpital. By then he had become unconcious.

He survived thanks to his mate but had a few years with poor hand function and had a number of operations following.
He is back surfing now. He is the only person I know that has had an encounter. Never seen one myself.

WOW Scotty thats huge!

My story like Scotties is not mine but a guy who i work with. He is a mad fisherman like a lot of people in my town and was out at a local wreck in his 16ft boat fishing for snapper. As he was pulling in his first fish (which he said was huge like every fisherman say's)he was just about to get the gaffer hook to pull it into the boat when a white pointer came flying up from the bottom depths and half it's body came flying out of the water and chompped half of the snapper and as he recalls it nearlly landed on the boat.

Now i thought he might of been crapping on a bit but there were witnesses in other boats who saw it as well.

He still fishes the same area but has since bought a bigger boat

Oh yeah i forgot to mention a few years back some fisherman caught a white pointer that got tangled in there long lines It is the biggest white pointer caught in South Australia and they have had a replica made for tourism center here in Port Pirie......And yes it's massive

Cheers

years ago when i was into scuba had a dive of Heron Island with a bunch of germans , any way that morning we caught a couple tuna , about 6 of us where down and one bright German tourist on the dive boat though it would be a good idea to attract some reef sharks with some chum , no reef sharks come only 1 very large tiger! We exited the water very quickly and the German guy was in a lot of ****.

Seen lots of reef sharks diving , but they aren,t very scary , never seen a shark surfing , but at least suppers have a paddle to ward them off.The best sea life i have seen supping was a few weeks ago at Currumbin 2 large Manta Rays glided straight under my board.

I was out with Clarky on Sunday for the Sup Shark watching , I can't believe how many sharks are down your way and no-one gives a F**K about them , they just cruise around eating bait fish and the odd tourist and everyone just keeps surfing.

Maybe you should buy your kids a fish ID book an I'm with Mac don't tell Sue

Time magazine did a great article on the things we actually fear and the things we should fear.

The odds of you being eaten by a shark are miniscule.

The odds of you dying from a heart attack from eating chips is very real.

It isn't the killer sharks you should fear but the " killer joules" and the "killer grams"
