Out the East coast today...surf a cracking left hander with just my mate about 3-4 foot a bit windy....look left look right there are 11 guys on the next peak and more joining them by the minute..meanwhile my peak and numerous others a going off completely unridden..paddle back to the beach through one of the peaks wfull of guys and get stink eyes from everyone....why so grumpy lads leave the pack behind and feel the love....

The herd mentality is a curious thing. I lived right on the beach in Mexico for 3 weeks in the early 90's. Long stretch of beach breaks, with a very popular surf break just 1 km north of where I was. I surfed mainly on my own, or with one or two guys out, one day we had a crowd of 4. Epic A-frames, 10-12' faces 2 or 3 times, averaged around head-high during the 3 weeks I was there.
That popular break, 1 km away along the single-lane road that followed the beach? Checked it out a coupla times, always crowded with Texans, Californians, & some Aussies, go figure.......
Gotta go back there one day, just to see whether the herd has finally worked out that you can get uncrowded waves just down the road

Sheep have always amazed me. It's the same with fishing. I find a nice spot away from everyone to just kick back in peace. Next thing I know other fishermen will set up right next to you, cross your lines etc. I think they see you and think you must know what you are doing and just set up shop next to you.

It's so good in Vic that we can still find plenty of great breaks to oursleves - on a good day the next break on a sup is just a 1 km paddle away.
