Hi, kid free all week, so can finally get out early or be home late, and the winds up, all week by the looks of it! Anyone got suggestions as to sheltered places to SUP in Melbourne when the wind's a bit high? Sitting home frustrated.
Could find a lake, but much prefer the beach!!

I'm outer north Melbourne (Yarrambat), so Frankston's too far, which is a pity coz it's often calmer there according to the graphs (and was beautiful yesterday!), but regularly hit St Kilda, Sandringham and Mentone.

Yarrambat...hmmm pity you can't get onto Yan Yean (I'm assuming that's still so). I don't know what else is out that side but I'll pm you a couple of contacts who might.

Thanks :) An hour 15 mins is sort of max travel on a regular basis so the petrol bills not thru the roof. Mentone / St Kilda takes about an hour.

Yan Yean's still out of bounds unfortunately. Same with Sugarloaf at Christmas Hills, tho the Sailing Club can use it. Yarra at Warrandyte's beautiful and close, but the rocks are scary and my board's too precious. Going to paddle Lillydale Lake soon, but the beach is my love!

Thanks for your message - very helpful!

Based on current Bay forecasts, if Sandringham is the outer limit of your travels, I'd recommend:

Tues - Southerly, 10 knots early strengthening during the day - Sandringham or Hampton (so as to avoid the black mud near the pier at Sandy) beach early, staying in the shelter of the Sandy Yacht Club, or even St Kilda inside the harbour. Take a windsurfer or kite and move down to Ricketts Point for a really good sail in the afternoon .

Wed - S to SE pretty strong from late morning - as above or, if a lot of east in it, any of the beaches from Ricketts Point up to Green Point in Brighton.

Thurs - Strong E early, dropping and going N/NE later morning and NW in the afternoon - probably stay around St Kilda or Point Ormond.

Fri - N/NW strong early - I'm sure DJ is keeping an eye on this - join others in the inevitable downwinder from St Kilda - Sandringham. Otherwise, in the lee of the harbour at either St Kilda or Sandy when it goes southerly late morning.

But, then again, this is Melbourne and the outlook could all change in 24 hours!

The best place to paddle on the bay when it your typical south/southwest winds (like it's been lately) is where I am almost every day.. St Kilda marina.

It can be white-capping and a big choppy mess on the other side of the breakwater wall and inside where I paddle is as smooth as a baby's bottom..

It was good to catch up with you today down at St Kilda marina..

I heard today that they are closing the gate beond the kiosk (for good) and pulling down our little piece of paradise that looks across to the city and been my daily hang out for the past 5-6 years..

We should be still able to paddle there but it wont be the same.

How about somewhere on the north side of Williamstown? Would be easier to get to from the northern suburbs than Sandringham.

That would mean crossing the bridge. There are trolls on the other side of that bridge.

Nah should be OK, the worst of the trolls are in southern Queensland.

Yes.. Driving over the West Gate bridge and back is a lot worse than it looks on the map.. There may be corners of that marina that's protected but any sort of southerly wind will get in to most of it.

Sandy marina was always another good option till they stopped us from paddling under the little walk bridge to the yacht moorings.. Now the only way to get into the best protected water is to paddle all the way around the long concrete wall and in through the gap.. (gates of hell on our downwinders)

Thanks Rosscoe, this is really good information! I'll get out there whenever I can. I headed to Half Moon Bay yesterday (Tues) on Human Cartoon's suggestion (though my 7am arrival meant I missed the 6.30 crew meeting up (3 hours sleep and I missed my turn), so Hampton / Sandringham would have been a good option) then hit St Kilda when the sun came out and caught up with DJ.

Yes, it was great to catch up with you. You're always so helpful too, which is awesome, thanks. It was good to try your new board - 1st race board I've on - and it was interesting to discover they have an orbit instead of a turn unless you do a race turn! I've been practising, but wasn't going to do it on someone else's amongst yachts without a legrope, without practising in the shallows first!
Very disappointed to hear about the lovely little nook at St Kilda going! I love that little area with it's little 'beach', penguins, water rats, and glassy water!

Actually, Williamstown's an ok option for me because I can take the Western Ring Road and stay well away from the scary trolls (I've tried the 'my big sister's coming after me, eat her instead' routine, but, alas, it has not worked). The time I headed to Williamstown marina for a paddle was when I decided I really have to learn to read wind maps though!
