Just thought it was time to bring this up. For as far back as I can remember shortboarders (by the way I ride short/long/sup) have been bleeting about how they would never ride a mal so long as their #rse pointed towards the ground. Well guess what fellas - now that you are all out their "rippin" on your stand up paddle boards - especially those of you on 9ft ish boards and claiming its a shortboard sup - WELCOME TO LONGBOARDING !! Yep I do believe boards 9ft and over are officially mals. You may be using a paddle but it is still a mal ! Dont get me wrong I aint having a dig (well yeah I suppose I am) I think it's wonderful and now you can see what you have been missing all these years. I suppose some of you riding sub 9"0 sups will say it's not a mal - I guess that's true - you are officially riding a mini mal hey !! hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

I don't reckon it feels anything like riding a proper Mal. Don't most mals have big fat noses and parallel rails?

My 9' 3 ripper looks more like a blown up short board to me and surfs accordingly.

Maybe as you say, like a mini mal.

I reckon pretty soon SUPs will crap all over Mals performance wise, particularly with designs developing and younger crew getting into it.

I've got a mal and a SUP. They're not the same. You want to buy a 9'6" surftech longboard?

Yeah Scotty, who cares ... who cares what it is "like"?

You are riding a board in the ocean. Full stop. That's all you need to think about.

If you are ripping that's cool, if you aren't ripping but you're smiling - that's cool too (maybe even cooler). Comparing it another type of board - who cares?

I think you may just need webbed gloves instead of ping pong paddles, but whatever floats your boat!

Coming in a bit late here but what I like is how people say SUP turn better than mals and are more high performance etc.

I think some people forget that mals are real mals and they are designed to be mals. They aren't bringing out new shapes every 6 months or looking to make them sub 9' or turn like a shortboards. How SUP can be compared to Mals i just don't get it!

I agree with Bnaccas i ride mals, and there is no comparison to sup,sup is in constant evolution in just the 6-8 months ive been witness to.As an example;since the rebirth of l'boards circa approx 1990.Noseriders, performance mals, and retro logs is arguably the full extent of the genre. I know there are those who would point to hybrids as interconnectors , but they are not main steam.I'm no sup expert but i'm willing to bet we will see significantly more change/ evolution if you wish in the similar 20 year time period.

Hi Fives IanR,

The reason people care is that over time they have invested a lot in there particular passionate persuit of their niche in the sport and their position!

In my situation I was resigned to believing that I would never see anything like shortboard performance on anything I was capable of riding. It simply would not happen as I could not invest the time to generate the fitness level required.

With SUP if the ocean is blown out I just head to the flat water and train doing paddling, kick turns, forced nose rides, etc that allows me to improve, waves or no waves. I get an awesome workout that has ripped in excess of 20kgs of me in 10 months! And i get to have fun too with the whole family, I cant see my family shortboarding???

Then along comes radical shapes 29-30 inches wide that I have been told for years wont work, lets face it they do and they work well! Shapers down my way wouldnt even entertain boards this wide, fancy putting your label on a freak board like that!!!!! I knew they were doing them in Hawaii and they worked exceptionately well for big buddas.

SUP is breaking a lot of rules, protected positions and history and people as a rule dislike change.

Lots more change to come, you can fight it or come for the ride its that simple!!!!!!!!

As I said the cat is outa the cage, I dont care who rides what I think we should try everything and respect each others right to have choice.

But everyhting is ruled by how much fun you have IMHO
