This was the first and last time i will ever buy a sup board from a surf shop that has to be sent by post interstate
I picked up my oversize parcel and raced home keen to take it for a spin
I was pretty excited to get home open my package and unravel my sup board throw it in the car and head down to the local for a quick paddle
Unfortunately after i opened it i knew it wasn't going to happen
First of all i was asking myself wheres the fins. Oh yeah...... There is none.......Whats this on the nose.....Broken....Great
Now instead of driving to the surf it was a drive to the local ding repairs.
Trying to sort out a centre fin for the fin box was also a mission in itself because i didn't have the original screws and fin so any new fin in the shop wouldn't sit firmly
Even the bloke in the shop who has had over 30 years in the surf industry was struggling to get a centre fin to sit properly
Not feeling too excited at the moment
So i guess i'm a bit jaded by the whole experience.
Wasn't all bad though
Just grabbed my 5'10 shortboard and went surfing

I know this probably wont help, but even retailers get boards and sometimes shipments of boards that all arrive damaged or with stuff missing. No - there is absolutely no excuse and it shouldn't happen, but until freight companies and the people packing up the boards get their sh#t together and start caring then it will continue to happen. If you are moving boards about on the east coast of australia then not using surf freight or surf cargo (no I dont work for them) is taking a risk with your board. They freight surfboards and similar craft only and they do it better and safer than anybody in this country. If you do ever have freight damage issues with every day freight companies then you better hope the person you bought the board off is prepared to look after you.
Mate I hope it all works out for you cos I have had the same experience and it really really f#cks ya off hey.

Well we dont know for sure it was the freight companies fault Billboard. The sort of shop that wouldn't bother to send you the fins sounds like the sort of shop that also wouldn't notice and/or care they sent you a damaged board.

And thats exactly what I mean about boards not being packed correctly - stuff missing (fins, screws etc) and of course poor packing overall. Also with the influx of boards from overseas there are many occasions where the board is packed up at the factory and then sits in a warehouse here in aus and then gets freighted out to customers all over aus' so there are multiple opportunities for a board to get damages - HOWEVER in that case surely there are multiple opportunities for that damage to be checked for also. I am not pointing the finger directly at the freight companies but on the whole they really dont take a lot of care with surfboards.

Just to give another point of view, I have had shipments from the following companies to OG with absolutely no problems:

Sam Windsurf and Snow NSW - Vic Country
Naish NSW - Vic Country
Dale Chapman QLD - Vic Country
Balmoral Boards NSW - Vic Country

The packing has always been overdone and they have always checked the boards first before delivery and wanted to know they turned up in perfect condition.

So its not a horror story

I hear ya about buying locally, had a similar experience when I bought a C4 from interstate and turned up with the rail smashed in, in two places courtesy of the freight company.
Couldn't take it for a surf for 2 weeks while it got fixed. On the upside the repairs done buy Rousa in Ocean Grove were second to none. On the funny side both damaged areas were right below fragile stickers, go figure!

To OG Sup
I think its a good thing that you mention these shops that did a good job and looked after you
Sounds like they deserve a plug so they can get repeat business and stay in the industry
I think it would be a good point of reference to those people that are unsure about having boards freighted as well
For me personally i'm over it
In fuure i'll get a local shop to order a board in if its not in stock

As a shop owner, there are a few freight companies i wouldn't touch. Surprising as it may be but we actually don't get that much freight damage as we used to.
I think freight companies are now just noticing that SUP's are big expensive surfboards and they are fragile.

I've sent boards all over oz, sometimes you win but sometimes not so good.

You can pack a board very well but if a frieght guy throws it off the truck you are still gonna get damage.

Unfortunaly SUP's are big heavy items and are more likey to get freight damage.

I've seen a freight company arrive out front of shop, only to be busy and i couldn't get out to help him. So he pushed a pile of 5 sup's off the truck on to the concrete gutter!!!!

I run out side to yelled at him "Mate they are frekin $2000 Stand up paddle boards you just threw off"!!!! his reply "soory i thought they were big board bag covers"?!!!

He never did it again after we xchanged words or two.

buy from a local aussie shaper

well they are local

boards no where near as fragile (or expensive) plus you get more for your money.

back up service more likely second to none

gives a real aussie a go

and gives you a warm fuzzy feeling knowing you are actually contributing to the future of grass roots australian surf industry

Just a few thoughts on the custom shaping.
After surfing for a very long time I can tell you custom boards of any description can be a trap and you can end up with the shapers interpretation of what they thought you meant.
Myself and a few friends have been dissapointed over the years with shapers from QLD, NSW, SA interpretations of board requests - Unless you can have the CAD drawing with specifics the chances of being disappointed can be very high unless you have a really good shaper that can convert your requirements into foam and epoxy.

Choosing a stock board with all the dimensions you want and the ability to demo one surely takes the guesswork out
